Paul Newman 1925-2008

Sad news folks, it looks like another screen legend has left us this week, as Paul Newman passed away on Friday at his home in Westport, Connecticut. There had been rumours floating around recently that he was battling some type of cancer, and apparently they were true. He was 83 years old.

There is little doubt that Newman’s career was an amazing one. He won an Oscar for The Color of Money in 1986, but was nominated for numerous others. Some of his most memorable films include Cool Hand Luke, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Sting, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and of course the Film Junk favourite Slap Shot. Most recently he provided the voice for Doc Hudson in Pixar’s Cars, and was set to reprise the role for Cars 2. He was also known for his Newman’s Own brand of salad dressing and many other products, the profits from which he donated to charity. The man will most certainly be missed. What was your favourite Paul Newman performance?

Just yesterday I watched “Torn curtain” again and now he´s gone. He starred in so many of my favourite movies – to many to liste them all here. Images from “Color of money”, “Cool hand luke”, “Slapshot” and others are runing around my brain in the moment.

Newman was one of the last Icons of an area long gone. A star without any scandal, he never needed negative publicity to stay in the spotlight. He was married to his wife for almost 50 years, he gave all earning from his sauces-company to charity.

It´s such a sad day for me and my thoughts are with his family and friends. At least he had a long life and gave me many hours of entertainment. I wll surely miss him. :(

  • You gotta love Cool Hand Luke decapitating parking meters.

  • Ian

I know he did a handful of good ones and I know there are some I haven’t seen (Hud, Hudsucker Proxy, Sometimes a Great Notion) but personally from a performance standpoint I liked The Hustler. It’s beautifully photographed but the character that Newman plays is very authentic in the way that his insecurities and sense of worth are tied to beating another person.

  • Im partial to The Towering Inferno but also also love him in The Verdict. When they say they don’t make leading men like that anymore its true. He was a MAN not a MAN-boy!

  • Derek

    Hudsucker Proxy

  • Goon

Butch Cassidy and Hudsucker were my favorites from him.

Raindrops keep falling on my head…

  • I like his Ranch dressing though.

Watched Cool Hand Luke tonight in memory, never saw it before. it was flat out awesome, 4/4 with no dead celebrity bias. It’s just that great.

  • “The Hustler” has got to be my favorite. What great performances by all involved!

  • I was just eating some Newman-O’s the same day that he died. Those things are tasty.

Yeah, this sucks. My favorite Newman film is probably The Hustler, but jesus he’s been in a lot of classic movies.

  • Bob the Slob

he is one of the greats, no doubt. He was amazing in Hudsucker Proxy…but then again…he was amazing in everything…like the bucketload of certified classics he starred in…RIP.

  • it’s hard not to admire Paul Newman for putting his money to work in such productive ways, such as his Newman’s Own line… high quality stuff and the proceeds go to good causes too, very smart

  • Movie Fan…..he was into car racing too. Which is cool.
