Charlie Kaufman’s Synecdoche, New York Trailer

The official trailer for Charlie Kaufman’s directorial debut Synecdoche, New York has arrived online this week and it definitely messes with your mind in much the same way that the movie does. I caught the movie at TIFF and came away disliking it more than I liked it (read the review here). That said, it is a difficult movie to judge fairly, especially when you feel like half of it just went right over your head. There’s no doubt that Kaufman is a brilliant screenwriter, but in this case I think he may have gone too far off the deep end.

The trailer does a good job of capturing the melancholy tone that runs throughout the film, and it highlights Philip Seymour Hoffman’s great performance along with the solid supporting cast. I’ll be interested to see what the reaction is when more people have a chance to see it. Synecdoche, New York hits select theatres on October 24, 2008. Check out the trailer below, or watch it in high-def over at Yahoo!.

I can’t wait for this film. It looks genuinely amazing. Perhaps Hoffman’s best performance since Happiness.

    Looks trippy.
