The Dark Knight Getting Oscar Run in Theatres in January

The Dark Knight just won’t go away! According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Brothers plans to re-release the movie into regular theatres and in IMAX this January as part of their campaign to win the movie a few Academy Awards. This is a common approach that many studios take with movies that are expected to get nominated; it helps keep the film fresh in the mind of voters, and it also helps them sell more tickets based on the Oscar buzz.

Obviously Heath Ledger is expected to get a nod for his performance, but it seems like they are really pushing the entire movie as a piece of filmmaking that deserves to be recognized alongside the best flicks of the year. Does it really have a shot? I’m not sure, but I’m wondering if this might be overkill either way. I don’t think there’s any danger of people forgetting The Dark Knight by the end of the year, it’s been on people’s minds for months now. Just release it on Blu-ray already so I can buy it damnit!

  • I think it actually has a chance.. I mean, not that it would, say, last year (with there will be blood, and No COuntry… and well, Juno, I guess) But is it just me, or is this year particularly dull in that sense? I realize the year’s best usually come out in the second half of the year, but I haven’t heard of any other potential Oscar contenders.. On the level of last year’s, at least…

  • You’re right, a lot of people are saying that there’s no major Oscar buzz building for anything at the Toronto Film Festival this year, except maybe The Wrestler. Depending on how things like W, Changeling, Frost/Nixon, Milk and Australia do, it could be a pretty thin year.

  • Another aspect of this is that it may then overtake Titanic in sales, if it can do about 80 million in January with it’s re-release.

  • I really wish they would give us a BD. Hopefully, they just don’t push around the same shit prints for the re-release. I’ll drive the extra distance to see it in DLP because I don’t want none of that line scratch going down every reel like the There Will Be Blood had in my area.

(Yes, I’m intent on seeing it in theatres again because I haven’t done that yet.)
