Michael Cera Says Arrested Development Movie Isn’t Happening

We talked a little bit on this week’s podcast about the possibility of an Arrested Development feature film, which has been rumoured to be in the works for a while now. It’s one of those on again/off again stories, with both Jason Bateman and Jeffrey Tambor claiming to have had meetings with series creator Mitch Hurwitz about a movie, and personally I just think it makes a lot of sense. However, Michael Cera seems to have a different opinion on the matter.

He recently spoke to the National Post about coming back to Toronto to screen his new movie Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, and he told them that he hadn’t heard anything about an Arrested Development movie.

“I don’t think I would want to see a movie of the series if I was a fan, anyway… and I don’t really see a need for it if you can get the three seasons on DVD.”

Obviously he doesn’t know many Arrested Development fans if he’s saying stuff like that, but maybe it’s just his subtle way of telling people to forget about it. It’s entirely possible that Cera simply wasn’t included in any of the early discussions, or that he wasn’t even going to appear in the movie. However, this suddenly makes the whole thing seem a lot less likely. The longer they wait, the more the cast will move on to bigger and better things, and the more their salaries will increase. If it doesn’t happen soon, I don’t think it will happen at all.

    You would think Fox realizes that AD fans would come out in droves if this movie went down. I do think what you said in the podcast was true: How can they make a movie that someone who hasn’t seen the series can understand without boring the fans looking for “inside jokes”?

    Yeah, and the episode where they (accidentally) get married is hilarious.

    I’ve read other interviews with Cera and he DEFINITELY has a lot of love for the show and everyone that was involved. Just look at all of the AD cameos in Clark and Michael. Regardless of what happens with the movie, I just hope that we get a definitive answer soon. But Sean…Cera might not be included in the movie? Come on. That wouldn’t make much sense.

    Cera might be hot to trot and all right now, but I sure hope he is not what is holding up this movie. If that is the case, and he endangers the movie being made, we don’t really need George Michael, do we? Give him the axe if that’s what it takes. We’ve got amazing draw cards from every single other character. The only less interesting character than George Michael is Maebe, and only slightly. George Michael could be off at college during the movie. I am hopeful that a critically acclaimed movie will drive the Arrested Development fan buzz through the roof, enough to show the demand for a resurrection of the show (or maybe televisions first outstanding spin-off?). PLeaaaasse!
