It looks like there’s a new Tarzan movie in the works, and no, it’s not going to be a Disney animated film. According to Variety, Stephen Sommers (The Mummy, Van Helsing) is in negotiations to direct the film, which is based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan of the Apes. Stuart Beattie (Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, G.I. Joe) will rewrite the script, which was originally penned by John August (Big Fish, Charlie’s Angels).
Apparently Guillermo Del Toro was interested in directing at one point, which would have been pretty cool. As it is, Stephen Sommers just seems like an obvious back-up choice (early in his career he directed The Jungle Book and The Adventures of Huck Finn). Although Tarzan is generally seen as a kid’s story, there have been some adult-oriented live action versions over the years and I guess it could be interesting if they go that route and give it a decent budget. But is there any question who would play Tarzan in Stephen Sommers’ version? Come on, Brendan Fraser is a no brainer!
