Stephen Sommers in Talks to Direct Tarzan?

It looks like there’s a new Tarzan movie in the works, and no, it’s not going to be a Disney animated film. According to Variety, Stephen Sommers (The Mummy, Van Helsing) is in negotiations to direct the film, which is based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan of the Apes. Stuart Beattie (Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, G.I. Joe) will rewrite the script, which was originally penned by John August (Big Fish, Charlie’s Angels).

Apparently Guillermo Del Toro was interested in directing at one point, which would have been pretty cool. As it is, Stephen Sommers just seems like an obvious back-up choice (early in his career he directed The Jungle Book and The Adventures of Huck Finn). Although Tarzan is generally seen as a kid’s story, there have been some adult-oriented live action versions over the years and I guess it could be interesting if they go that route and give it a decent budget. But is there any question who would play Tarzan in Stephen Sommers’ version? Come on, Brendan Fraser is a no brainer!

  • “Apparently Guillermo Del Toro was interested in directing at one point”

Wow, do you even have to write this anymore? Del Toro is in talks to do every movie these days! I can’t imagine how the dude has time to actually make movies for all the time he spends in talks about making movies.

Brendan Fraser should be Tarzan, and Luke Ford can play his son who is only 13 years younger than him.

  • Stephen Sommers blows and Tarzan is a boring character. That is all.

  • Swarez

A no brainer would be Casper Van Dien.

    Agree with Ryan’s comments.

  • The dude that did Mummy and Van Helsing..It’s like producers don’t see the bad movies that these directors dp…yikes..

talk about another potentially ruined franchise..

  • Moore

Qhat awesome irony would it be that 12 years later after playing George of the Jungle, Fraser played Tarzan.
