Live Action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Reboot is Real

I am totally stoked about this next bit of news. A while back there was a wild and crazy rumour floating around that another live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie might be in development. It came from the official Playmates TMNT website, but they quickly changed the text to hide any mention of the movie being live action, instead just saying that another TMNT movie was on the way.

But now TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman has confirmed the news himself, via the Heavy Metal Forums:

“Yes, it is true. Although the CGI film did well enough to warrent [sic] a sequel, there has been much talk between Imagi and Warners to do a better “re-invention” (newest Hollywood buzzword) of the TMNT’s, in a live action film–like what was done with Batman. Back to basics, back to the origin and the intro of the Shredder, etc…there have been talks, trips to Northampton to talk to Mr Laird, and discussions with the original “first” TMNT film director Steve Barron to come back and do it right–but no official word yet…will keep you posted. Best, Kevin”

The original 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie is still a favourite of mine, and I think it holds up well even today. I would love to see them go back to the Jim Henson suits and make the story a little more mature. I’m not sure that the original film’s director needs to be involved though — he already had his shot. I’d much rather see another high profile director take this movie and make it his own. The one thing that seems weird is that Imagi would still be involved, since they are an animation studio. Please don’t tell me they’re making it live action with full CG Turtles… come on, that would be terrible! As long as they stay away from that idea, I’m really looking forward to it. What do you think, will this actually happen or is it just a lot of talk?

  • This is the perfect franchise for M. Night Shyamalan. If only he weren’t shooting himself in the foot with that other anime movie shit.

If he did this, my mind would blow.

  • Matt

I’m not really expecting anything good to come out of this reboot. So if it turns out to be decent, I’ll be pleasantly suprised.

  • Is Guillermo Del Toro in talks to direct? That oughta whip up the fan boys!

My striking pronouncement: If the turtles are made of real rubber suits, it will be awesome. If they are CGI, it will be shit.

  • Bob the Slob

“do it right”…um he did it right the first time…god I hate the world.

  • It’s weird because I didn’t think the new generation of TMNT shows had the child fanbase to warrant a live-action film. I guess they are going after us twenty somethings who grew up with the original stuff. They need to do Krang or Baxter Stockman or any other villians this time as well. Maybe even some of the mood from the original comics would be refreshing here.

How in the Hell is calling back the director of the original a re-invention? And I think everyone in the world would agree that CG turtles would be shit.

“If only he weren’t shooting himself in the foot with that other anime movie shit.”

I think those movies will be Shyamalan’s return to form! He’ll finally be trying new things.

  • CG turtles is cool with me. I doubt it could be anything but a comedy with men-in-suits, and I’m all for that, but I’m all for the other thing as well. I love most of the action in TMNT, and I doubt that could be recreated with men-in-suits. I mean be honest everyone, even though the first movie is pretty good, the ‘ninja’ aspects are pretty laughable.

I wonder why the ninja turtles are so endearing to me. I think it comes down to the look, just being so awesome. I’ve always loved green for some reason, and both the primary-color look of the cartoon AND the shadowy, art-deco look of the turtles in TMNT I think are completely awesome.

  • Neil M

Reminds me of a classic Film Junk podcast moment…

“If you go back to that time period and look in the homes of every single Canadian and American…and…maybe… Indian, Pakistani, whatever, you will see VHS copies of: ET, Batman, Teenage Munnnhijuiitaturtles, Home Alone and…Wayne’s World.” — Mr. Jay Cheel

I rewound that probably twenty times. The man is a legend. It’s from the versus segment in the ‘Children of Men’ episode (around 20 minutes left) if anyone wants to hear it.

  • It is true, I owned all of these on VHS except for Wayne’s World. (I had Dick Tracy instead.)

  • Like I’ve been saying… as long as they get the Henson folks to do the costumes again, I’m ALL for this, baby!!!!
