2008 Toronto After Dark Festival Initial Line-Up Includes Jay’s Short Film The Goblin Man of Norway

While everyone’s busy focusing on the almighty Toronto International Film Festival, there’s another cool little local film festival about to put the finishing touches on its own line-up for next month. The Toronto After Dark Film Festival is a showcase for cult and genre movies from around the world, and this year’s line-up is shaping up to be another great mix of horror, sci-fi and action. Even more exciting for us, however, is the fact that Jay’s own short film The Goblin Man of Norway has officially been selected to play in the Short Film Program!

We’ll post the screening details for that when it becomes available, but in the meantime, here is the initial line-up of feature films that have been announced so far:

  • Repo! The Genetic Opera: Gothic rock opera from the director of Saw II, III and IV.
  • Red: Revenge thriller starring Brian Cox, Robert Englund and Tom Sizemore.
  • Let The Right One In: Swedish vampire love story that J.J. Abrams has tapped for a U.S. remake.
  • Idiots & Angels: Twisted animated fairytale from Bill Plympton with a soundtrack by Tom Waits.
  • Tokyo Gore Police: Ultra-violent Japanese sci-fi horror film that has been compared to Robocop.
  • Mirageman: Chilean superhero movie starring stuntman/martial arts superstar Mark Zaror.
  • Trailer Park of Terror: Based on a comic book series about six high school students and their teacher fighting zombies in a trailer park.
  • Who is KK Downey?: Dark indie comedy about a two failed musicians who perpetrate a hoax impersonating a non-existent celebrity.

The full line-up and schedule will go online on September 24th, but you can already order your Festival VIP Pass for the special early bird price of $99. Check out a preview of the first 8 movies embedded below.

    Awesome!

  • Jay edited The Goblin Man of Norway and did the cinematography for it too didn’t he?

  • Big congrats to Jay! I’m not making it to TAD this year but I’m definitely disappointed I won’t get to see this on the big screen.

  • Mitch

    Nice work Jay.

  • Congratulation! What exciting news and what a fun festival to be a part of. Yay!!

  • Reed Farrington

Jay did the music as well! BTW, Sean, Tom, and I have cameos! If he had only given me a line, I could have gotten my SAG card.

I’m afraid Jay will have a new set of friends soon. And he won’t have time for Film Junk podcasts. Or Cantankerous.

Ah, yes, I knew him when…

  • Jay really left a stamp on that director’s work. Figured he took the reigns on music choice too. I’m gonna watch the rest now and see whats up.

And yes…once he does his first feature he wont wanna be your friend anymore. Borrow as many of his DVDs as possible while you have the chance.

  • “Director Howard Byrackk has pushed his unique form of storytelling to a new extreme in his latest documentary film.”

I was astonished at how similar in style it was to Obsessed & Scientific but it turns out Jay did direct this. If Jay googles “Goblin Man” he’ll received another unneeded ego injection. It actually had me going for a few moments after I saw the metal Goblin Man parts! Someone will think this is real. Before the Goblin Man showed up as metal I was thinking “man, that guy he’s interviewing is so interesting he could be an actor” lol.

Maybe Jay wont leave you guys and he’ll cast you in most of his movies like so many other directors. Awesome short, great job!

  • Wow, that was a pretty awesome short. I definitely recognized a lot of Jay’s techniques in there (as well as a few good cameos). I love it when sci-fi is more a question than a bunch of fantastic answers, which is exactly what this short was. Great stuff, Jay.

  • Thanks for the comments guys! Glad you’re enjoying the film.

I’m very excited to watch it with an audience. Especially at Toronto After Dark.

  • I thought the font in the beginning was cool, simply because we’d go on to see that in your niagra falls film.

  • I suppose I can live with having Greg Grunberg’s career. However, when Jay ends up directing a Star Trek movie, I’ll drop everything to have a cameo in it.

The day Jay changes his font is the day pigs will fly in hell.

  • cronenfly

That was awesome jay! I really liked the score as well.

  • vee

Fantastic job! That was a very fun film!

  • Congrats Jay, it’s a great film.

  • James

Congratulations, Jay. I hope the screening goes well!

  • I eagerly await Jay’s response on this viewing.

Reed, I was just happy to help out. If anything, we’re the Walt Flannigan / Jason Mewes to Kevin Smith. Its all good.

  • theman

    Awesome!!! Good Job good short.
