New To Theatres This Weekend: Aug. 29, 2008

Well it’s the last weekend of the summer folks, and the studios definitely saved the best for last. (Not really.) There’s a double bill of low brow comedies heading our way including College and Disaster Movie (the latter of which probably has jokes that will be outdated by sometime next week), and a new sci-fi epic starring Vin Diesel called Babylon A.D.. Sundance fave Hamlet 2 is finally playing in a semi-wide release, and the Don Cheadle thriller Traitor, which is probably the only respectable one in the bunch (and probably too serious for people trying to hang on to the last bit of summer). Last but not least, Takashi Miike’s new film is finally playing in North America… in one frickin’ theatre. Good luck with that. What are you seeing this weekend?

The director of Babylon A.D., Mathieu Kassovitz, is dissing his own movie before it opens. I don’t remember a director ever doing that before. I think there’s been actors who have done it and retractions quickly followed for damage control.

Here’s what he said: “I’m very unhappy with the film. The script wasn’t respected. Bad producers, bad partners. It was a terrible experience.”

Now I can’t wait for the DVD release to listen to the director’s commentary! Oh, wait. Maybe the studio won’t let him do a commentary…

  • I guess I’ll follow up on my own comment from under a year ago. I just finished watching Babylon A.D. And I thought it was a thoroughly enjoyable and thought-provoking film! At least the Unrated Extended Cut was. And as I presciently speculated, there is no director commentary on the DVD.

I might do a Bargain Bin review of it. Has anyone else watched this film? And liked it? I think the film got generally bad reviews, but I don’t know what the major criticisms are. People seem to think I have bad taste in films. I wanted to confirm it. :-)
