Brett Ratner Itching to Direct Guitar Hero: The Movie

You have to hand it to Brett Ratner… not only is the guy an honest-to-goodness real-life Hollywood director, but he truly has his finger on the pulse of America. He recently noticed that there was an untapped desire for even more movies based on video games, and so he moved to rectify that situation by taking on a big screen God of War adaptation. Now this week he has thrown out another gem of an idea: a movie based on the wildly popular Guitar Hero franchise. Sure, that could work. Right?
Ratner recently spoke to MTV about being nominated for an MTV Video Music Award, where he professed his love for Guitar Hero:
“I love Guitar Hero and I think it’s a part of pop culture. I would love to do a Guitar Hero movie, if Activision would ever let me. I’m trying to convince them, but why would you have a movie screw up such a huge franchise? Not that I would make a bad movie.”
I love it. “Not that I would make a bad movie.” You’re digging yourself a hole here Brett! Apparently he has been helping Activision get the Guitar Hero brand placed in music videos and other media, so he does currently have a working relationship with them. However, I’m sure they politely declined when he told them that his idea involved “a kid from a small town who dreams of being a rock star and he wins the Guitar Hero competition”. In other words, The Wizard for a new generation.
Personally I’d prefer it if a kid got sucked into the video game world and got to ride the tour bus, shooting up heroin with his favourite band. Come on, this would be perfect for lots of rock star cameos! So, yeah, as ridiculous as this whole story is, I am willing to bet we will actually see a Guitar Hero movie within the next couple of years. Anyone care to put money on it?
