Monday Morning Box Office Report: Aug. 25, 2008

Ben Stiller’s Tropic Thunder had another solid weekend, responding to positive reviews and good word of mouth to take in $16 million which placed it at the top of the heap for the second week in a row. Surprisingly, The House Bunny managed to take the #2 spot with $15 million… who knew Anna Faris had this kind of star power? Paul W.S. Anderson’s Death Race claimed the B.O. bronze with $12 million, while The Dark Knight and Star Wars: The Clone Wars rounded out the top 5. Notably absent from the top 10 this weekend was The Rocker starring Rainn Wilson, which out and out bombed and debuted at #12. It earned just $2.7 million despite having the fourth highest theatre count… looks like Dwight Schrute isn’t such a big star on his own. Poor guy.

1. Tropic Thunder — $16.1M
2. The House Bunny — $15.1M
3. Death Race — $12.3M
4. The Dark Knight — $10.3M

  • I like Rainn Wilson in the Office, but his schtick is played out. He looks more and more desperate for attention in every role he’s in. He needs to take it down a notch. The Rocker had a fairly interesting School of Rock-esque premise, but the preview was just Wilson’s character falling down and getting hit by stuff over and over again–that probably drove people away.
