New To Theatres This Weekend: Aug. 22, 2008

An eclectic mix of mildly interesting stuff hits theatres this weekend, from Paul W.S. Anderson’s Death Race remake, to Fred Durst’s football movie The Longshots, to Rainn Wilson’s first comedic lead role in The Rocker. There’s a lot of buzz around the indie comedy Hamlet 2 starring Steve Coogan, which is only in select theatres this weekend, and the director of Wordplay has a new documentary about debt called I.O.U.S.A. Are you seeing anything this weekend?

No, nothing here is worth my hard earned dollars. Maybe Hamlet 2, but I think I can hold my excitement for that until it comes out on DVD.

I really liked the trailers for Death Race, but I hear it sucks. It may be a guilty pleasure for me, like the Fast& the Furious movies.

  • Haha: “Fred Durst’s football movie.” I don’t know why but that’s just funny.

I’ll probably be seeing Hamlet 2 this weekend and hope Film Junk can do a podcast review of it in the next couple weeks. I will be avoiding Death Race like the plague. It looks hideous. I am embarrassed for everyone involved, except for Paul W.S. Anderson, who’s never made anything worth watching (what’s with those initials? Is he trying to confuse people into thinking they’re seeing a Paul Thomas Anderson movie?).

I might have been interested if they had cast Ian McShane and Powers Boothe as Frankenstein and Machine Gun, but no, no, this looks terrible.
