Ron Howard’s Frost/Nixon Trailer

The first trailer for Ron Howard’s Frost/Nixon has appeared online this week, written by Peter Morgan, the same guy who did The Queen. He seems to specialize in historical plays and films, often focusing on a famous person during a very specific time in their lives rather than giving a full-blown biopic. Indeed, Frost/Nixon is not meant to compete with Oliver Stone’s Nixon, instead it only deals with Nixon’s post-Watergate interviews with talk show host David Frost.

Frost and Nixon are played by the same actors who appeared in the stage performance: Frank Langella is Nixon, while Frost is portrayed by Michael Sheen (who also played Tony Blair in The Queen). Kevin Bacon plays Nixon’s former White House aide Jack Brennan. Although it may seem odd to spend an entire movie re-enacting some famous TV interviews, it also obviously shows what went on behind the scenes and there are some intriguing moments in the trailer. Will it lead to another round of Oscar nominations for Howard? We’ll have to wait and see. Frost/Nixon hits select theatres on December 5th.

I wonder if it really shows what happened behind the scenes. With these sort of docudrama historical dramatizations based on true stories I think audiences have to view them with a grain of sand. I’m sure Frost has spoken about his impressions interviewing Nixon but I wonder how much reality the film will bring and how much of that might interfere with whatever agenda the drama of the narrative will have.

  • This movie would be much better if instead of Frank Langella and Michael Sheen it starred Frank Stallone and Charlie Sheen.
