Simon Pegg Drops Out of Inglorious Bastards to Star in Greg Mottola’s Paul

Tough break folks, it looks like Simon Pegg won’t be starring in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Bastards after all. Pegg revealed on his MySpace blog that there were “insurmountable scheduling difficulties” with his upcoming film Paul (which we reported on back in May). However, he has also revealed that Superbad director Greg Mottola has signed on for the project, which is an exciting prospect indeed. Some might say it’s crazy to turn down a role in a Tarantino flick, but it seems that Pegg is honouring his other obligations and you have to respect him for that.

In other Inglorious Bastards casting news, Ain’t It Cool News reports that Freaks and Geeks star Samm Levine will also appear in the film. Is QT taking notes from Ben Stiller’s Tropic Thunder, which also featured F&G star Jay Baruchel? Either way, it’s always great to see these guys getting work. If you haven’t seen Freaks and Geeks yet, what the heck are you waiting for??!

  • didn’t Baruchel play in Undeclared rather than Freaks & Geeks?

great to see most of the Apatow affiliates getting work. And like you stated Sean, if you haven’t seen Freaks & Geeks yet, move your ass!!!

  • F&G/Undeclared = same thing! But you’re right Julien, my bad.

Just try to imagine how The Americans will interpret that absurdly stupid movie. That’s like calling Washington an asian. LOL

I really don’t see how this is a smart move on his part. I feel like he would have really broken through with this Tarantino flick. Oh well. Once in a lifetime opportunities come by all the time for him, I guess.

  • All of the actors who’ve been turning down roles in Inglorious Bastards lately (Simon Pegg, Adam Sandler, Tim Roth, and I believe DiCaprio as well) seem to be doing so because of scheduling conflicts. It sucks that these guys won’t be in the film, but it really all comes down to the tight schedule Tarantino’s trying to fit the production into to try to have it ready to show at Cannes next year.

As far as Paul is concerned, as a massive fan of Spaced, I’m dying to see Pegg take on the role of an average nerdy guy again. I wish Edgar Wright were directing it, but Superbad was hilarious, so I’m not going to scoff at Mottola.
