New To Theatres This Weekend: Aug. 15, 2008

In theatres this weekend it’s probably a three way race between Ben Stiller comedy Tropic Thunder, the new animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars feature, and of course, The Dark Knight. Alexandre Aja’s Mirrors could also do some decent business, but it’s still hard to see anything topping The Dark Knight. In a smaller number of theatres we have Woody Allen’s new movie Vicky Cristina Barcelona, an independent CG 3D flick called Fly Me to the Moon, and the Luke Wilson dramedy Henry Poole is Here. What are you seeing this weekend?

Star Wars: The Clone Wars
Tropic Thunder
Mirrors
Vicky Cristina Barcelona (semi-wide)
Fly Me to the Moon 3D (semi-wide)
Henry Poole Is Here (semi-wide)
A Girl Cut in Two (limited)
Bottle Shock (expanding)

I’m deciding whether I want to see Tropic Thunder or Pineapple Express. If anyone on film junk has seen both let me know which is better.

Sean, are you guys planning on reviewing Tropic Thunder on this week’s podcast?

  • Yes definitely Tropic Thunder. We were actually going to try to catch that and Star Wars: The Clone Wars at the drive-in, but Star Wars isn’t playing at the drive-in. Damn you George Lucas.

Ok.. sometimes it’s a bonus to see a movie and hear you guys talk about it after, so that may sway the decision. (and good early reviews)

I wish we had a drive-in… I’ve never had the experience. There used to be one around here in Detroit, but it went out of business before I was old enough to go.

Tropic Thunder has its moments, but I found it was extremely overrated with a whole lot of lulls. I’m finding I’m apparently in the minority with this thought. 1.5/4

  • I wish you could have reviewed Clone Wars (the first Star Wars movie that people wont camp out for and that will not debut at number one). If I go to the theaters this weekend I’d see Tropic Thunder (or more likely Pineapple Express because of Greg and Jay’s rave reviews).

After seeing Tropic Thunder, I’ll definitely agree with you Goon that this movie is overrated. I don’t know if mentioning these are spoilers, but I really liked the fake trailers, trip mine scene and girl-back-home scene. The look of this movie annoyed the hell out of me. Maybe it was the cinematography or the filming locations. It never felt like they were in Vietnam. Shows like Man vs. Wild are more visceral than this without even trying.

Ended up seeing Tropic Thunder… the first two trailers were hillarious!! Really clever. I wish these types of things were before every comedy.

It was a decent movie overall, IMO. Good enough to get out of the house.
