Cthulhu Trailer Starring… Tori Spelling?

For a guy who wrote the majority of his work back in the 1920’s, H.P. Lovecraft has a pretty big following nowadays (more than he ever did when he was alive, at any rate). And yet, despite all the influence that he has had on the horror genre over the years, there haven’t really been too many high-profile movies based on any of his stories. Stuart Gordon directed an episode of Masters of Horror based on Dreams in the Witch-House, and of course he also did the movie Re-Animator, which is also based on a Lovecraft story. But what about the Cthulhu Mythos, a popular subset of his work that is so popular they’ve made role-playing and video games based on it?

After years of low-budget and short form adaptations, it looks like someone has finally made a Cthulhu movie, although whether or not it will actually be deemed worthy by Lovecraft fans remains to be seen. First time director Dan Gildark is the man behind Cthulhu, drawn from the short story The Shadow Over Innsmouth. The fact that Tori Spelling was the biggest name in this movie had me a little bit worried, but I have to admit, the trailer doesn’t look as bad as I thought it would. What say you, H.P. Lovecraft heads? Is this the Cthulhu adaptation you’ve been waiting your whole life for? Cthulhu hits select theatres on August 22nd; check out the trailer below or in Quicktime over at Apple.

From what I’ve read this a fairly lose adaption and is basically just a crazy cult movie with Cthulhu himself nowhere in site. Oh and it’s also gay.

of course this should have read “nowhere in sight”. Damn you lack of edit buttons.

  • This looks like a made for TV movie. That doesn’t immediately mean it’ll be horrible, but I’m willing to bet that it will be.

Also, you mentioned The Re-Animator and Dreams in the Witch House being directed by Stuart Gordon, but he also made Dagon, Castle Freak, and From Beyond, which are all based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft. Dagon isn’t the greatest, but the latter two are definitely worth checking out for fans of Gordon and Lovecraft’s stuff.
