New To Theatres This Weekend: Aug. 8, 2008

So the question on everyone’s mind this weekend is, can Pineapple Express take down The Dark Knight? I’d have to say there’s a pretty good chance, considering all of the early numbers and the positive buzz… but then again, who knows. Knocked Up only made $30 million in its opening weekend, but The Dark Knight made over $40 mil in its third week. Another wild card in the equation is The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, which will probably get some good business from its female demographic (although the original didn’t do that amazing). Also out this weekend is Larry Bishop’s biker flick Hell Ride, produced by Quentin Tarantino. It’s getting a wider release than I expected, but it’s still only opening in 82 theatres. What are you seeing this weekend?

Pineapple Express was pretty awesome. I had a great time watching the film and it’s definitely one of the best stoner comedies I’ve seen.

I thought Pineapple Express was extremely sloppy and not that good. It has some moments, but is generally unmemorable. I give a 2/5 , which is what equiv on Film Junk, a 1.5 maybe out of 4?

Tonight I saw another new release, Man on Wire, a documentary about a wirewalker who went between the WTC Towers in the 70s. it is my new #1 of 2008 and will be tough to beat.

I saw Hell Ride. Meh. It was OK. Better than Brotherhood of the Crusty Boxers at least.

  • Pineapple Express had been built up so high by the internet film community, it almost has no place to go but down when you actually see it. I feel the same thing may happen with “Tropic Thunder.” It’s tough to go in with no expectations when you keep hearing how amazing it is.

I never even realized that it had been hyped up so much. I’d say at least 95% of the movie-going audience doesn’t involve themselves in the internet film community and that is probably the same percentage of people who enjoyed the movie at my screening. Maybe only visiting a few movie-related sites on the net enabled me to enjoy this movie so much? Nah, if a movie is good, then it’s good and that’s what I thought Pineapple Express was.
