American Gladiator to Play Lead Role in New Conan Movie?

There’s been a lot of talk lately about another Conan movie, continuing the movie franchise based on Robert E. Howard’s books. There was speculation at one point that they might wait for Arnold Schwarzenegger to reprise his role once his stint as the Governor of California is up, but the problem is that he won’t be available until 2011. Since a Red Sonja movie has already been greenlit with Robert Rodriguez at the helm, it would make sense that they’d want to start moving forward with the next Conan movie as soon as possible.

This week we have a tip about someone who might be close to landing the lead role in the new Conan flick, and no, it’s not Gerard Butler. According to /Film, Mike O’Hearn (aka Titan on American Gladiators) has been auditioning for the part, and he thinks he is pretty close to sealing the deal. He says he has also been trying out for the part of Captain America. Now, keep in mind, this scoop came from O’Hearn himself during an appearance on a radio show, so it could just be a case of him trying to sound like a big shot. On the other hand, O’Hearn previously starred in a direct-to-video movie called Barbarian, which basically makes him a shoo-in, right? Personally I don’t see him as Captain America at all, but maybe… just maybe… he could be right for Conan. Let’s face it, great acting chops are not exactly a requirement. What do you think? Check out O’Hearn’s demo reel, embedded below.

Gerard butler would be awesome as Conan…I could even see Clive Owen with more muscle…but this guy??? Granted Conan doesn’t necessarily need great acting chops, but a great actor could make the character great.

I for one never like Arnold as Conan. Yes his body fit the part but his acting didn’t. For me his acting was kind of distracting and John Milius the director created a really boring Conan world.

This Conan needs excessive violence and nudity just like a Conan should have! But more importantly it needs great vision and it would help to have some great acting chops too!

  • I on the other hand think Arnold was great as Conan just because Arnold is Arnold. That “lamentations of their women” line is classic now right? A great actor would be nice…Clive Owen would be good but Arnold set the bulking up precedent.

This guy? meh. I can’t really see anybody in the role of Conan, except for Arnold. If they could somehow do the new Conan digitally like Beowulf, except not make the faces move like blocks of rubber, it might be decent. If they are going with a live action movie they should pick an actor who is grotesquely muscular, somewhat foreign sounding, and completly oblivious to his own arrogance, like Arnold. But there is nobody like that, and so whoever they cast it will end up being a distraction. By the way, has anyone ever heard of Corgoth of Barbaria? It was an Adult Swim cartoon take off of Conan the Barbarian. Much like the Venture Bros. is a take off of Johnny Quest. It was really funny but only the pilot was made. Look it up on youtube.

  • The Korgoth pilot is wicked, unfortunately it seems like Adult Swim never greenlit a full series.
