Forgetting Sarah Marshall Gets a Sequel / Spinoff?

With the runaway success of most of Judd Apatow’s films over the past couple of years, we know that studios are dying to squeeze more material out of him and his posse ASAP. There have reportedly been offers on the table for sequels to both Superbad and Pineapple Express (the latter of which hasn’t even been released yet), but as of right now, they haven’t taken the bait. And why should they? With all the ideas that these guys seem to have floating around in their heads, there’s simply no need to rehash anything at this point in time.

According to CHUD, however, there is one Apatow sequel in the works right now, although it’s not quite what you’d expect. Universal have apparently been hounding Jason Segel for a sequel to Forgetting Sarah Marshall since it came out in March, and so what they have decided to do is make a spin-off starring Russell Brand’s character Aldous Snow (some may know this as the previously announced project Get Him To The Greek). Jonah Hill co-stars, but will play a “wet-behind-the-ears insurance adjuster instructed to ensure Brand’s wildman gets to a gig”. No word on whether or not Jason Segel or Kristen Bell will make appearances, but Forgetting Sarah Marshall director Nicholas Stoller is writing and directing. What do you think, does Russell Brand have what it takes to carry the film? He’s already pretty well-known in the U.K., apparently, but still somewhat unknown here in North America.

  • I enjoyed FSM, but I don’t think there’s enough there for a sequel. The Aldous Snow character was hilarious but he wasn’t very realistic. The glue that really held the movie together was its emotional pull, and Snow was just a comic caricature.

It’s true that Russell Brand is well know in the UK…a household name in fact. His BBC radioshow podcast is regularly number 1, and his recent biography “My Booky Wook” also hit the number 1 spot in the book charts. He’s been famous over here for a variety of things for quite a while…stand up, presenting, etc. Weird as this may seem to a North American, for the average (non-filmgeek) person in the UK, the main draw for Forgeting Sarah Marshall would have been Russell Brand, rather than Judd Apatow. Hence he was the most prominent person on the poster here.

He’s also famous (or infamous) for his personal life…he’s a recovering heroin and sex addict (amongst other things), and talks about these things frankly in his book, radioshow, and standup. He divides people generally…my girlfriend wouldn’t see Forgetting Sarah Marshall because he was in it…she finds him sleazy. For my part, I find his radioshow entertaining, and despite the fact that he pretends not to be, he is clearly very sharp and intelligent, and is often laugh out loud funny.

It will be interesting to see how he does in America. He’s making all the right moves, and is mixing with some big players…Apatow, Sandler etc. I notice that he’ll also be presenting the MTV awards. He did spend time at acting school, so he has some training, but it has to be said, he played largely a version of himself in FSM. Hence he could either be massive, or else everyone will be bored of him in six months and you’ll send him back to the UK…

it’s funy that joel would say that the character of Aldous Snow is not realistic, because Russell Brand was basically playing himself in that role, just a little bit more dramatic. i think that he could easilly do a great job in the spinoff.

  • matt

  • Guy

trust me the Aldous Snow character is very realistic because that is exactly what Russell Brand is like

I think that they should DEFINETLY make a sequel, but they have to put jason segen and mila kunis in it!! thats what we loves about the movie, to me mila kunis is the co-star in this one, not whats-her-name, the blondie….ahhh yes…kristen bell. Jason segel, mila kunis, peter and rachel GREAT IDEA!

  • emma

I agree with above they should definetly make a sequel.
I love this movie and would love to see Rachael and Peter make a life in L.A. A sequel isnt a sequel if you dont have the main charictors in it and Brand needs to be in it hes great sooo funny.
Anyway do hope to see the follow on in shops soon PLEASE PLEASE you got too.

the sequel is confirmed, it is in the making, unfourtanatley almost no one from the original cast will be in it, jason segel is not, mila kunis is not, not even the girl that played sarah marshall is in it (i forgot her name). i know that sean “diddy” combs will be in it….kinda sucks that they went this way :(
