Austin Powers 4 Confirmed

Back in March, we reported on rumours that a fourth Austin Powers movie was in development. Now this week we have confirmation that although the movie has not officially been greenlit, Mike Myers has been writing a script over the last little while with Austin Powers 2 and 3 co-writer Michael McCullers.

According to Nikke Finke at Deadline Hollywood Daily, the main characters of the film will actually be Dr. Evil and his son, and the story is described as “very personal with a father and son theme loosely based on his own life”.

Well, I suppose that might give it a slightly different twist, although from what I remember that theme was already explored a lot in the third Austin Powers flick. At any rate, it’s no surprise that Myers would return to the Austin Powers franchise after The Love Guru bombed, but I wonder if New Line are now thinking twice about Mike Myers’ box office appeal. The Austin Powers name will probably still fill seats, but if The Love Guru is any indication, I don’t think Myers has that same creative spark he once had. Would you watch a fourth Austin Powers movie?

  • I’ve never been fan of Mike Myers but I think it is a little unfair to write him off after just one movie. Don’t you think?

  • I just think Mike Myers has nothing left in his creative arsenal. We’ve seen all he’s got, and he still tries to use the same jokes. After the Love Guru, people finally caught on.

Just seeing the headline, I instictly exclaimed…O NO! The third one was one of the bigger disappointments of the decade…and mostly because of Beyonce. So maybe if he gets an actual actress this time to play opposite him, but then again, I’m not realy sure he left anything in the tank either. should just stick to shrek sequels and pray for a shrek cartoon on saturday mornings.

  • Stephen: I actually didn’t like Austin Powers 2 that much and I thought part 3 was just okay. So as far as I’m concerned, it’s not just one movie. However, each of those movies has brief glimpses of brilliance, so who knows what he might have up his sleeve.

  • I thought the first film was brilliant and I didn’t understand why three even needed to exist. Four will only work if it really is different. I can only hear the same jokes so many times and think they are remotely funny.

  • In my eyes the only good Powers film was the original. I have no interest in this whatsoever.

Well, it’s not just The Love Guru we’re talking about, but also Austin Powers 3, Cat in the Hat and the Shrek films (yeah Shrek made a lot of money and got some critical kudos, but I think many film fans will agree that they are unbearable). I think this news at least this indicates the guy is running out of ideas for films or support from studios to try something new. Who knows, maybe Austin Powers 4 will be the comedy hit of 2009, but it’s safe to say that if it’s anything like the third one, it’ll definitely feel out of touch in the current Apatow-driven “emotionally realistic” comedy film climate.

I liked #1, although only after a second watching.
    #2 was okay.
#3 was not. It had… issues. I guess the best description was “rehash”. The bits were kinda funny. But it didn’t work for me as a whole. I got the impression that Beyonce was just standing around waiting for Mike to be funny, and Michael Caine was just slumming it.
    (bought the DVDs of 1 & 2, not 3)

    #4 will I see it? Yes….? Maybe?

i think if anything was to save him it would be a waynes world 3 they show it can still be done when he did it at the MTV awards and i think people would like to see them back more than austin powers

  • i think the next movie is going to be lame because its only going to have dr.evil and his son
