Adam West: The Batman Diaries

As any fan of the 1960’s Batman TV series probably knows by now, the show has never been released on DVD due to a legal deadlock between Fox and Warner Brothers over the rights. However, coming out of the San Diego Comic Con last week, there were some wild rumours spreading that the series was finally about to be released. An article in the latest issue of Agent DVD indicated that West was working on special features for the complete series DVD collection. However, a spokesperson at Fox was quick to insist that “There are currently NO plans to release the TV series”. So which statement is true?

How about… both. The folks over at TV Shows on DVD went to work digging up some facts. It turns out that Adam West is indeed working on some “special features”, however it is a project he is doing on his own and it will not accompany an actual release of the TV show. West’s project is tentatively called Adam West: The Batman Diaries, and it will be an “episode by episode guide to the series”, filled with behind the scenes info.

This sounds like a cool idea; West must have realized that the TV show will probably never see the light of day anyway. Personally I think I’d prefer to see a feature length documentary on the show rather than a smattering of bits and pieces about each episode, but I’ll definitely take whatever Adam West has to offer. It sounds a bit similar to another DVD that came out a couple of years ago called Batman: Holy Batmania! that has short documentaries on the show plus Adam West, Cesar Romero and Julie Newmar. Stay tuned for more info as it develops.
