MTV Developing Rocky Horror Picture Show Remake

If there’s one movie that is probably considered the ultimate cult classic, one that has the most dedicated legion of fans but is too weird and offbeat for the mainstream to ever embrace, it is Jim Sharman’s 1975 musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show. And guess what movie MTV is about to remake? Yep… The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Prepare yourself for a massive outpouring of hate across the web.

According to Variety, Lou Adler, the executive producer of the original, is teaming up with BermanBraun and Fox Television Studios to create a new two-hour version based on Jim Sharman and Richard O’Brien’s screenplay. It sounds like it will probably feature a brand new soundtrack, however. The fact that Fox Television is involved leads me to believe this will be a made-for-TV adaptation, sort of a High School Musical for the goth set, although the article doesn’t confirm this.

This project was rumoured to be in the works for years (Marilyn Manson was reportedly offered the lead role at one point), but I didn’t really think anyone would have the balls to pull it off. Well, I guess I was wrong. A director and cast still have yet to be decided on, but Adler is hoping to have it ready in time for next Halloween. Someone get Darren Lynn Bousman on the phone!

I was wondering when this would happen.

The anger is going to be extreme. The first time I watched it, I thought it was the dumbest thing ever. Then I saw it in the theatre with the fans and the experience was fantastic.

  • I cannot comprehend why this movie is popular.

  • I can comprehend it’s popularity but I don’t condone it. Musicals are simply not for the screen. I would like to see it with all the fans dressed up and raving but beyond that I’ll never subject myself to it again.

This remake could quite possibly lead to the most catastrophic fan hatred imaginable. Plus, didn’t this barely make any money the first time around? The fans wont see it because its blasphemy and the general public wont see it because its a weird little movie with drag queens and musical numbers. I thought the whole point of doing a remake was cashing in on something with a large following that is beyond cult status.

  • I think its just pure revolting. Sorry, not into cross dressing and the perversions that go with it.

  • Greg

I’m not into cross dressing either…however watching the crazy fans appreciate it was fun.

  • Cross dressing aside, I jst never got into this one. I have seen it several times, and just can;t get into it.

Not to mention it falls the hell apart at the end.

  • I, for one, am completely stoked that this is happening! I’m a HUGE Rocky Horror Picture Show fan and I absolutely LOVE Marilyn Manson! I think the two combined would be phenomenal! Many of my friends agree that this is so exciting and we can’t wait to find out if this “rumor” is true. To see this remake done would be so incredible and yeah it may cause some drama, but who cares??? Does it really seem like any true Rocky Horror fans or Marilyn Manson fans really care about the drama and the reaction of the everyday public? Ha. Not at all.

    amanda nestor—NO!

im your average fan of this movie. not huge and crazy, but i do like it. a remake will be shit. the only reason it will be remade is the same reason all films are being remade….cos noone can think of new scripts. any decent new scripts will never be considered as they are not a popular medium for the general audience of today. so, it would be too much of a risk for any movie company to try anything out.

    balls.

    No

    Please God No

Marilyn Manson is light years away from being as SEXY

and ELECTRIFYING as Tim Curry was. I can’t imagine

anyone else playing Dr. Frank Furter.

    mmkay,
I’ve seen ONE supportive comment posted and I would have to say, right on. I LOVE The Rocky Horror Picture Show and I believe that this remake won’t be AS good as the first one, but it will still, straight up, kick some ass. Marylin Manson is pretty much a GOD to me so I’m a bit biased to the idea but I mean come on. Are you all just gonna sit there and be so narrow minded about this miracle? My friends and I are totally jazzed to see how this movie turns out and if you didn’t like the first one then the easy answer is to not go see this one…duh.
Some fans may be angry about a remake but as I said before, don’t be so narrow minded about things; open your eyes and accept new things. That’s the only way to live life to the fullest, n’yah mean? <3

    Whoops I meant
    *Marilyn*
ick I hate when I do that. —>(x.x)

  • Alex

im pissed about this… u cant change a cult classic there is absolutely nothing wrong with the rigina rocky horror and there i no reason for a remake… and true, sickly obsessed fan of rocky horror picture show, such as i, would never support this so those of you who claim to be fans and support this remake obviously never had a true rocky experience, and i cant believe u guys are comparing Marilyn Manson to Tim Curry because no one will ever be a better frankenfuter then him, although Marilyn Mason might play the part well he will never get even close to the amazing frankenfuter tim curry created. i can believe MTV actually considered makingthis a remake never mind actually go through with this… im soooooo upset

  • Alex

and GabiMayAllDayTM you dont know what ur talking about so dont talk

  • first things first,
many may not like manson for his music or taste in visuals… but i’m sure all of you heard his music that he produced for dozens of popular films like queen of the damned & resident evil. he’s an amazing producer. & a very thought provoking actor. i give him a lot of credit for those two things. not to mention i am a die-hard fan of his.

second, rocky horror is one of those movies that have come and gone.. and yet people still remember the sweet transvestite, and know how to do the time warp. i, myself, have done skits including those songs and monologues from that screenplay. i honestly think this is a horrible idea to do a remake of this cult classic. whether you like it or not, it’s still a classic well-known around the world. has anyone NOT learned from the previous remakes of classics? some do fly.. and most don’t. this, by far, will not fly.

keep a classic a classic. don’t ruin it for it’s orignal fans. and don’t force a new generation into liking a remake. if you wanna show them rocky or a classic, show them the classic.

  • Ashley-bay

You can’t remake a cult classic, no matter what movie it is. And the fact that MTV is doing kind of makes me want to cry, but it may be a good thing as well.

I’m not for the remake. To me, it would be like remaking Pink Floyd’s: The Wall. Completely out of the question. When/If this comes out, I’m going to go see it, but only because I feel obligated. I went to see the live action Dragon Ball movie (which was horrible, by the way).

I heard Marilyn actually turned down the role of Frank-N-Furter. It makes me wonder who they’ll ask next. Johnny Depp?

Just because it’s an old movie, barely got any recognition, and is about a sweet transvestite doesn’t mean that you should remake it to fit the common public. Are you going to remake Sixteen Candles and Fast Time At Ridgemont High, too?

    Why MTV and Fox, why?
