Outlander Trailer Starring James Caviezel and Ron Perlman

You know, I really wanted to get into the trailer for Howard McCain’s upcoming fantasy/sci-fi epic Outlander. The idea of making a barbarian movie with a sci-fi twist seemed both nostalgic and new at the same time, and yet as I sat and watched this thing, the more reality started to sink in for me — it basically looks like crap.

Yeah you’ve got James Caviezel, Ron Perlman and John Hurt in there, but that’s not necessarily saying much. They’re not fooling anyone with the use of The Lord of the Rings music and Barrie Osborne’s producer credit. I am mostly reminded of Pathfinder, a movie I was enthusiastic about until it actually hit theatres and got ripped part by critics. When faced with the prospects of actually sitting through it, I simply opted for something else instead. But hey, maybe if they renamed it to “Vikings vs Aliens” and launched a viral internet marketing campaign, I might be willing to give it a second glance. What do you think, is this trailer genre-bending fun or just plain bad?

  • I think this looks pretty awesome. I love dragons, and I love vikings, and this at least looks R-Rated. When was the last time there was R-Rated medieval warfare? I guess 300 was R-Rated, but it still managed to look sanitized and family-friendly. I just wish it didn’t have the horrible Lord of the Rings music in it. I like Jim Caviezel, I like John Hurt, I assume Ron Perlman plays the dragon? Good stuff. Don’t know about the spaceships that shoot lasers, I think it’d be cooler to just see vikings vs. a dragon, but I will go and see this if it gets a release here.

“I assume Ron Perlman plays the dragon?…”

Nope. He’s the one crushing some poor dude’s skull in with two Hammers at the start of the trailer.

  • Ryan M.

    Looks generic and boring. Pass!

  • Bob the Slob

I think it looks kickass 80’s style…too bad it has some form of CG in it…guess i have to hate it since it doesnt qualify as a real movie…fuck cg to the depths of hell. I love you all. bye.

  • Oh that’s too bad. Still looking forward to this though.

  • By the way, on the subject of dragons, what are the chances of a movie being made featuring Tiamat? I know the D&D movie was horrible, but if GI Joe is as succesful as Transformers, maybe somebody could dish out for the rights to the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon show, with the kids with magical weapons, Dungeon Master and Venger, and have it feature a fullblown Tiamat?

    Tiamat4Life.

  • I saw this trailer the other day and think it looks pretty cool. It reminds me of the Bruce Jones comic book Warlord about an air force test pilot who accidentally travels back in time in an experimental plane and has to survive in an extinct culture of warriors. I like the idea of mixing sci-fi with medieval settings, though hopefully this will turn out better than Krull.

I think it looks pretty good. But I’m also careful to not get my hopes up since Pathfinder looked all sorts of awesome but when I sat down to watch it it just went further and further down hill. It had mostly to do with the HORRIBLE use of Icelandic by the actors, who destroyed any sense of tension, drama or any emotion trying to speak in a language they don’t know. Terrible stuff.

While there is some old Norwegian in the film it’s mostly in english thank god.

Good point about Pathfinder! It looked so cool, it ranks up there with Independence Day as my greatest film heartbreaks.

Don’t rule out Sci Fi and Sorcery…look at Krull!

Here is a link to a St Petersburg (FL) Times review of the new Batman film. He was vary glowing about and he is normally a very tough critic. He was talking “Oscar”

Looks like fun. It would be nice if they had some shots in the daytime. Part of the pleasure of a S&S movie is the scenery.

This looks pretty awesome. Pathfinder looked like crap from the first trailer I saw. I felt Pathfinder had been stashed away for years because it was terrible, and was released only to try to cash in on 300’s success. Weird thing is that, that one actor was in LOTR, Pathfinder, and now Outlander. He played Eomer in LOTR.

Karl Urban was supposed to play in Outlander as well but did Pathfinder instead when financial problems arose with this one.
