Passchendaele Trailer Directed by and Starring Paul Gross

If you’re into World War I movies, you might be interested in this one, even though it comes from an unlikely source. Passchendaele is a Canadian movie directed by Paul Gross (Men With Brooms), focusing on the Battle of Passchendaele, where Canadian troops worked together with British, Australian and South African units to capture a village in Belgium from German control. I suppose the fact that the story is told from a Canadian perspective may turn off some viewers, but hey… not every movie needs American heroes, right?

The trailer looks a bit melodramatic but at the same time the production values are quite high (for a Canuck flick anyway). The movie is reportedly budgeted at $20 million, the most expensive in Canadian history. Will Paul Gross’ masterpiece also outGROSS Bon Cop Bad Cop to take the title for most successful Canadian movie ever? Passchendaele will open this year’s Toronto International Film Festival; you can check out the trailer below. For more info, visit the official site.

  • After Slings & Arrows, I’d pay to see Paul Gross paint a house.

  • I’m really looking forward to this. The trailer looks promising, as does the fact that Gross has been working on this for 10 years.

  • I was thrilled to be an extra in Passchendaele. I travelled from Kingston Ontario to Calgary and stayed there for five weeks to be in the movie as a background extra. For those who are wondering about how well it will be received, I would like to assure you that what I saw was thrilling. When special effects, musical score and all the other goodies are added I am sure that it will make all Canadians proud.

  • Hoping it is historically accurate and as a military man, makes me proud.
