Bob and Doug McKenzie Get Their Own Animated Series

Although we sometimes criticize Canadian TV shows and films for being too Canadian here on Film Junk, I think there is one flick that we can all agree is just the right amount of Canadian: Strange Brew, aka The Adventures of Bob & Doug McKenzie. Based on the popular SCTV characters played by Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis, this 80’s cult classic touches on Canadian stereotypes without relying on them entirely.

Despite plans for a sequel called Home Brew that never got off the ground, it looks like the McKenzie Brothers are finally about to make their triumphant return — in animated form. I understand that there is an animated TV pilot included on the Strange Brew DVD, and now the same company (Animax Entertainment) will be bringing the show to primetime TV early next year. Canadian network Global Television picked up 13 episodes of the series for their 2009 schedule, and Fox has followed suit in the U.S. I have a feeling that this will end up being pretty uninspired, but I’ll give it a chance, if only for the sake of Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis’ careers. Embedded below is a promo clip for the show that played at the New York Comic Con earlier this year, courtesy of Quick Stop Entertainment.

I was at the studio where they produce this show a couple weeks ago. It was pretty cool.

This is going to be on Teletoon for DECADES, I can see it now.

Animation looks similar to “odd job jack.” Should be good for a laugh.

I watched Bob and Doug’s 24 year (I think) special on CBC, and it was cool. I think this could be fun. I’m crossing my fingers for a “Corner Gas” cartoon. Maybe Greg could do the voice of Brent, since he looks, and sounds, so much like Brent Butt.

  • I love Strange Brew ALOT…genius.

  • Rick Moranis? Is that guy even still alive? What ever happened to him?
