I have to admit when I first saw this trailer for the upcoming movie Visioneers, I wasn’t quite sure what to think. Zach Galifianakis, in addition to having the hardest name to spell in show business, is a pretty bizarre and funny guy, and I’ve enjoyed most of what I’ve seen of his work to date. Now put him in a movie that sounds like it was cooked up by Charlie Kaufman, and you should have a pretty promising project on your hands. Except… what if you don’t have a Spike Jonze or Michel Gondry in the director’s chair? Can it still be twisted and brilliant, or will it just feel like a second-hand substitute for the real thing?
Visioneers is about a guy named George Washington Winsterhammerman (Galifianakis), who lives in a world where everyone works at the same corporation, and he starts losing his mind when the people around him begin exploding due to stress. Like, literally exploding. First-time writer/director team Brandon and Jared Drake are the ones behind this intriguing flick, and Judy Greer (Arrested Development) co-stars. The trailer certainly looks like it could be a sketch from Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, but will it work for 90+ minutes? I’m not sure, but I definitely look forward to finding out. Visioneers premieres at the Seattle International Film Festival this month; check out the trailer below and see what you think.
