Monday Morning Box Office Report – June 2, 2008

The women came out in force over the weekend, helping to carry Sex and the City to a box office victory over Indiana Jones 4 this past weekend. The movie earned $55 million, which apparently makes it the biggest opening for an R-rated comedy ever. Interesting. Indy didn’t do too bad himself though, with another $46 million in the bank, bringing his total to $482 million worldwide. The Strangers had an impressive opening weekend too, claiming the #3 spot against so many other blockbusters, while Iron Man and Prince Caspian rounded out the top 5. There’s a pretty huge drop-off for the rest of the movies in the top 10 though… Forgetting Sarah Marshall is still hanging on at #10 with another $1 million added to its coffers.

1. Sex and the City — $55.7M
2. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull — $46M
3. The Strangers — $20.7M
4. Iron Man — $14M
5. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian — $13M
6. What Happens in Vegas… — $6.85M
7. Baby Mama — $2.22M
8. Speed Racer — $2.14M
9. Made of Honor — $2M
10. Forgetting Sarah Marshall — $1.04M

not bad for what I would consider a one quadrant film, and like you said R-rated at that. Indy had four-quadrants of the audience, (young, old, male, female) and still succumbed.

I was actually expecting higher numbers. Well I guess when you’re up against Indy it is a hard battle for the bucks.

  • The story here for me is that “The Strangers” did almos $21 million on a weekend when Indy and Sex and the City are also in the theater. That’s pretty damn good.
