Kevin Smith’s Zack and Miri Make a Porno Teaser Trailer

zackandmiriteaser.jpg

I can’t say I’ve been really looking forward to Kevin Smith’s next movie thus far, because, well… it just seemed like yet another typical Kevin Smith comedy. On the one hand, Zack and Miri Make a Porno finds him working with a some new faces including Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks, and also takes him outside of the Jay and Silent Bob universe (what are the odds they’ll make a cameo?). On the other hand, I’m guessing it could probably just as easily be called “Jay and Silent Bob Make a Porno” with only minor modifications to the script. Sure, he’s good at writing potty humour, but somehow those jokes doesn’t excite me as much as they used to.

So now the first teaser trailer for Zack and Miri has hit the web, and, wow… I can’t believe how unfunny it is. Even Seth Rogen, who is normally a pretty hilarious guy, seems to be floundering here. Granted, the teaser is just a scene of Rogen and Banks auditioning actors for their porno, and asking sex-related questions. Maybe it would have been wiser to hold off for a more standard trailer that would give us a better sense of the entire movie rather than just one scene, but still… I don’t know. I’m not digging what I’m seeing so far. I’m going to try not to jump to any conclusions based on this, but already I’m wishing he had gone with that Red State horror movie he’s been talking about instead. Watch the trailer below and let us know what you think. Zack and Miri Make a Porno hits theatres on Oct. 31st, 2008.

Well… it’s basically outtakes so let’s not pass judgement just yet. But I agree, maybe it would have been better to just wait for a real trailer..

  • I don’t mind Kevin Smith. I just hope he’s not desperate for material, and trying to co-opt Judd Apatow’s schtick. Also, he has mentioned several times on his “Smodcast” that there is full male nudity in this film. I hope he’s not leaning on that, expecting it to be comic gold.

    I guess we’ll see.

  • I could never understand or believe why people found “Knocked Up” even remotely funny – but Sean, if I recall correctly, you did – and that is why I am surprised you don’t think this clip from Kevin Smith is?
    It is:
    -the same humour
    -the same forced timing
-the same foul language aimed at shocking the viewer (watch sex-type screwball comedies of the 80’s, this is nothing new)

We see the same thing with all of Judd Crapatow’s movies.
Personally, I found this clip quite amusing (and I don’t find that Seth Rogan is all that funny), but for this, he was alright.
Perhaps it if didn’t have any heart at all, like “Knocked Up” or had a mean-spirited character like the Seth played by Jonah Hill in ‘Superbad” (who coincidently plays the same character in every film, which is why I don’t know the reason they keep using him at all) it would be funnier?
Come on, this is Kevin Smith! It is going to be high-brow, low-brow and in the end very revealing.

  • Between his podcast, Evening With DVDs, and recent-ish book, I like Smith more than I like his movies these days, but I’ve still been keeping my eye on Zak & Miri. This teaser didn’t do much for me, and I think that’s mainly because Rogen and Banks were obviously ad-libbing here and neither seemed to be terribly good at it. I’ll wait for an actual trailer before I pass judgement.

  • Rian, you said it correctly– Kevin Smith is an engaging and funny guy, he just no longer makes decent, or even watchable movies.

Having said that– I am looking forward to “Red State.” I love that title.

  • I think Seth Rogen is funny, but he looks disgusting and so does Elizabeth Banks. I guess the whole movie is dabbling in a disgusting realm, but it puts me off. And I think I’ve had enough Kevin Smith comedies for a lifetime about now. He’s moved on from his own schtick to just take in whatever seems to be popular. His youtube videos and podcast are ripping of Ricky Gervais, and he’s casting the Judd Apatow big black guy in this, as well as somebody from the Office, in addition to Rogen/Banks? With a little Jason Mewes and Jeff Anderson thrown in there. It’s a clusterfuck.

Umm. Seth Rogen is funny and Kevin Smith is irreverent as all hell with his sense of the old dick and fart jokes but is there anything to this movie?

  • Me

Dont forget this is Lil Jimmy Nortons big break (The creepy guy from HBO’s Luck Louie).
