Yes, Bubby is available from Blue Underground – their site has the trailer, which gives a good indication as to what you’ll be getting into. Which is pretty much Passion of the Christ for atheists. Except it’s intentionally funny. It is also, as Swarez said, pretty fucked up.

The filmmaker, Rolf de Heer, is severely underrated. He

is without a doubt doing some of the most interesting work being done in film right now. In Bubby he used several experimental techniques, including sewing binaural microphones into the lead actor’s wig to better replicate what the character hears. He also used a different look for each section of the film, and used multiple cinematographers to help accomplish this.

de Heer has directed several other excellent films, including The Quiet Room, The Tracker and Ten Canoes.

Bad Boy Bubby is one fucked up movie. It was a big hit here in Iceland and heavily discussed film.
When you think about the story it is scarily like the horror that was just discovered in Austria.

This is even more exciting than the list of Criterion Blu-Ray titles. Of the announced titles, Bird With the Crystal Plumage is the best by far. Some others I’d love to see are the Larry Cohen films, Django, Revolver, and above all others, Bad Boy Bubby, which is one of my favorite films, period. Jay, I’m interested to hear whether or not you have seen this and what you think of it if you have. It feels almost like a Werner Herzog version of Forrest Gump only both darker and more optimistic than that sounds.

The Last Countdown is definitely worth a look. You’ll be either pleased or disappointed to know that you’d never know it was produced by Lloyd Kaufman.

Now I wait for the first Troma Blu Ray.

One of the things that killed HD-DVD was that it was too cheap for CE companies to make that they wouldn’t make any money of it. So companies bowed out before Toshiba pulled the plug. People are so impatient these days for prices to come down. Since when has that ever happened when a new technology is released? Calm down people, it will get there, just give it time. DVD players were more expensive when they first came out and it took a few years for them to come down in price.
All good things come for those who wait.
The best Blu Ray player at the moment is the PS3. It’s a great value package, a gaming machine for the kids, a DVD player, a Blu Ray player, web surfer and a media center to stream movies from your computer. So for 400 bucks I’d say thats a pretty good deal. Wallmart and Best Buy have recently released their in-house label Blu Ray players for under 300 dollars. So prices are coming down.

I’ll be getting the William Lustig titles for sure, I’ve got a big hard on for his films. And to see Tom Savini’s work in HD is going to be great. Going to have to check out The Last Countdown. Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman produced that film.

Argento is a good thing, and FIRE&ICE rocks, I like me some Bakshi from time to time…that one is due for a revisit.

I second the Phenomena request in BLU, (but there is time, I’ve no desire to upgrade at the moment and my regular DVDs of most of Argentos back-catalogue won’t be ‘upgraded’ any time soon.
