Patrick Fugit to Take Over for Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man 4?

Although we still have yet to hear any official word on a fourth Spider-Man film and who might direct it, an interesting rumour hit the web this week concerning the possible re-casting of Peter Parker. I guess we’re to assume that Tobey Maguire signed a three movie deal and that he definitely won’t be returning if another movie happens, and according to Latino Review, the current frontrunner to replace him is Almost Famous star Patrick Fugit.
I have to admit, I’m a bit surprised to hear his name crop up. I just watched his latest film Wristcutters: A Love Story a month or two ago and I remember thinking that he really hasn’t done much after Almost Famous. He’s been in Spun, Saved, and a few other smaller films, but certainly nothing as high profile as Cameron Crowe’s flick. Although he was perfect for that particular role, I don’t think the guy has a ton of depth as an actor. I could see him capturing the nerdy, awkward side of Peter Parker just fine, but I don’t know if he has the charisma to also be believable as a superhero. Michael Angarano (Sky High, The Forbidden Kingdom) is also supposedly in the running. What do you think… do you like either of these choices? Can the Spider-Man franchise carry on with an entirely new cast?
