Simon Pegg and Nick Frost to Play Comic Book Geeks in Paul

From Cannes this week comes news on yet another upcoming project for Simon Pegg and his buddy Nick Frost. Previously we had heard some sketchy rumours about Edgar Wright’s next flick (tentatively titled World’s End) which would complete the trilogy they started with Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. However, there is also another movie that Pegg has apparently finished writing with Nick Frost, that they are hoping to shoot within the next year or so (without Wright, I’m assuming).

The movie is called Paul, and Pegg describes it as “a road movie set in America about two British comic book geeks that get into an adventure across America”. Comic book geeks? Wait… isn’t this just basically Spaced: The Movie? Okay, so Nick Frost’s character wasn’t a comic book geek in Spaced, but still, it’s hard not to see a resemblance. Pegg addresses the feeling of deja vu by reciting that age old adage, “write what you know”, and yet, I can’t help but feel a little disappointed to see them return to this material. I don’t know, maybe I’m just being a bump on a log… Kevin Smith has written the same movie like 6 or 7 times now, right? What do you think, does this announcement excite you?

On a related note, there’s an interesting article in The Guardian written by Toby Young (author of How To Lose Friends and Alienate People) about his experiences hanging out with Simon Pegg while promoting their movie at Cannes. He certainly sounds like a super nice guy.

  • Hey there…

I just stumbled on your blog, and I love it! Keep it up.

  • I’m interested in anything when I hear Pegg’s name attached. Moreso if he’s involved in the writing process.

I don’t think that this concept sounds all that much like Spaced. I mean, that show involved a character who was a comic book fan, but the show wasn’t particularly based around comics, it had no road trips to speak of, and it didn’t involve British characters out of their element in America. I’m sure there’s more to the film and it’s plot than just “two British comic book geeks that get into an adventure across America”, so I wouldn’t lose hope yet. I mean, I’m pretty damn tired of sub-par zombie and action movies, but Pegg and Frost gave us the incredibly original and entertaining Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, so I’m essentially excited about just about anything they do at this point.

  • Yeah, I’m with Rian completely.

I had also heard the film was going to reverse their roles in that Nick Frost would be the main protagonist while Simon Pegg would be his sidekick…. so that could be a funny change of pace.

Edgar Wright is one of the most refreshing directors to hit the screen in some time. I’m just glad this will be the last one starring the dynamic duo as it is time for Wright to move on.
