First Clip from Steven Soderbergh’s Che

Steven Soderbergh’s Che Guevara biopic premiered at Cannes yesterday, and it seems to be getting mostly positive reviews. If things go well, it could be on track to be Soderbergh’s first film since Traffic with a shot at an Oscar nod, but it’s obviously way too early to be talking about stuff like that. For the time being, there’s just a lot of buzz around Benicio Del Toro’s performance as the revolutionary freedom fighter, and a lot of debate over whether this portrait of Che is accurate and, more importantly, sympathetic.
One thing I didn’t realize is that Che, actually consists of two separate films: The Argentine and Guerilla. Each are two hours long, which makes you wonder how this might be released in theatres in the long run. Are they supposed to play together back to back a la Grindhouse, or will they stand as individual companion pieces like Clint Eastwood’s Flags of our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima? At any rate, the first clip from the movie has turned up on the Cannes website, and it briefly showcases one of the guerilla warfare scenes. The release date is still TBA, but I’m itching to see this. Check out the clip below and see what you think.
