Brian K. Vaughan to Write Runaways Movie

I’m not the biggest comic fan in the world, but I do try to read the occasional “funnybook” here and there, and one of the few writers that I have been following with some enthusiasm for the past few years is Brian K. Vaughan. Like many people, I got into him through the wildly popular series Y The Last Man, and from there I checked out some of his other work including Ex Machina and Runaways. I was surprised to find myself pretty addicted to the first volume of Runaways for a while there, despite the fact that it’s definitely aimed at a younger audience and contains plenty of corny soap opera elements. Incidentally, it looks like Runaways is the next Brian K. Vaughan series slated to for a big screen adaptation.

Marvel Studios have announced that Kevin Feige will be producing a Runaways movie, with Vaughan himself writing the script. The story revolves around a group of teenagers who band together when they find out that they are the sons and daughters of super villains, and decide to use their inherited powers for good. As silly and cutesy as the series is, I’d much rather see a Runaways movie than a Smallville-esque take on some other characters (ie. Justice League) just because it was created specifically to be a teen-oriented series in the first place. Personally I’d also prefer the Runaways movie to standalone, rather than have cameos from other heroes in the Marvel universe, even though the comic itself did have appearances from the Young Avengers (among others). No word yet on what kind of release window they’re looking at for this, and unfortunately, no word either on the status of the one BKV movie I really want to see: Y The Last Man!

  • I’ve been wanting to catch up on Runaways for the longest time, but just haven’t found the time for it yet. I quite like the works of Brian K. Vaughn, but at the moment, mainly because I know just about nothing about the book or it’s characters, I’m not really anticipating this film’s release. We’ll see.

I much lke the Runaways series and, while it’d not on the Top of my must see list, I would enjoys a movie related to the series alot.

The main quetion being…How do you make a movie not too “corny soap opera” and too filled with reasons and such when each character has powers for such different reasons? (alien…witch…prodedgy…mutant…ect) Will the Runaways movie have to use the plot lines of other Marvel plotlines just for it to make sense?

Or will they have to change the plot line altogether?

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see…and yes, I will go see it.

  • I believe a Runaways movie would be great but do you think they are moving a little fast. Marvel is not very good a making cartoons let alone movies and I don’t want to see the runaways get discontinued because they screw up the story. Besides. Who could you really find to play the runaways the way they were meant to be portrayed. The story would be the real problem. How do you plan to make the Runaways movie story line without
    1)The fillers.
    2)Other super heroes.
Without them the runaways story would be all drama and no action and I absolutely won’t spend my hard earned money on a b@#$% fest. It could turn out to be another Ironman or worst the Fantastic Four.
