This Week on DVD – May 20, 2008

The major new release on DVD this week is National Treasure 2, coming out just in time to compete with the original adventure franchise, the far superior Indiana Jones series! Also out this week is the Happy Madison comedy Strange Wilderness, George A. Romero’s latest zombie film Diary of the Dead, and Justin Lin’s mockumentary on Bruce Lee’s final film Finishing The Game. A few interesting documentaries this week including one about an Australian surf gang called Bra Boys, and a mini-series from Brett Morgen (Chicago 10, The Kid Stays in the Picture) about a small-town high school basketball team called Nimrod Nation (note that Operation Homecoming: Stories from the Heart is a TLC special, and not related to the Oscar-nominated Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience as far as I know). All this plus the third season of The Muppet Show and Short Circuit on Blu-ray! How can you go wrong?

  • I really don’t think it’s fair to compare national treasure to indy, indiana jones is a classic and i would say the national treasure series is a homage. I saw Finishing the Game on IFC on Demand which shows low profile indie films on demand while there in theatres, please do not waste your time on this. It never achieves being funny,it ultimatley adds up to nothing, and it features a painful cameo from M.C. Hammer.

  • I picked up “Diary of the Dead”– probably going to watch it tonight. One of the cool features is the 5 winning fan zombie films. If you guys review it next week I would love for you to include your thoughts on the short films as well.

  • One of the shorts was directed and starred Teller from the comedy/magic group Penn & Teller. It doesn’t quite seem fair that he should be one of the winners. I mean the fact that the guy is rich and pretty famous had to sway the voters that decided which films won. Had he not been a notable person, I don’t think his film would have won.

  • Sorry to post three times in a row, but…

Those were the winning fan zombie films?

    Really?
