How To Lose Friends and Alienate People International Trailer Starring Simon Pegg

Here’s a new trailer for another British comedy that I have been really looking forward to. How To Lose Friends and Alienate People is based on the true memoir of Toby Young, a British journalist who moved to New York to write for Vanity Fair, only to make a complete ass of himself along the way. Simon Pegg has been tapped to star in the film as “Sidney” Young (names have obviously been changed to protect the innocent), while Jeff Bridges looks absolutely spot on as Clayton Harding (ie. Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter). The movie also co-stars Kirsten Dunst, Gillian Anderson and Megan Fox, which sweetens the deal just a little bit more.

Fans of Ugly Betty and The Devil Wears Prada will probably take an interest in this, but the thing that has me most confident in the film is that Curb Your Enthusiasm director Robert B. Weide is in the driver’s seat. How To Lose Friends and Alienate People hits theatres in the U.K. on October 3rd; no word on a U.S. release as of yet.

  • I love the concept of this movie, as well as a few of the actors, but the trailer looks absolutely stupid to me. It looks like every other cliched comedy that I’ve avoided because of how simple they’ve looked. Are my standards a bit too high? Something tells me that I should probably just read the book instead.

  • I don’t care about Simon Pegg, but I love Jeff Bridges and Kirsten Dunst so I am definitely looking forward to this, even though I agree with Rian that there was not one funny moment in the trailer. Well, except for Jeff Bridges’ look, but I saw that in the previous trailer already! He does look awesome though. I wonder if there is any sort of extreme look he can’t pull off? Doesn’t seem like it. And the guy is almost 60! Seems about ripe for starring in another John Carpenter movie, doesn’t he?

  • It’s definitely edited together to make it seem like a goofy slapstick comedy, but buried in amongst that stuff it looks like they’ve nailed the right tone for all the awkward and embarrassing moments.

I read the book a while back so I’m happy to see the trailer…sort of. I like Simon Pegg (he’s actually a good match for the real deal) and Robert B. Weide does a great job with Curb Your Enthusiasm. However, if I saw this trailer having not read the book I’d write this off as a shitty comedy that I’d never want to see. Hopefully the movie uses slapstick sparingly and portrays Toby Young’s antics a Larry David sort of way. (Toby Young actually was a Larry David according to the memoir!)
