Rainn Wilson is a big part of the success of NBC’s The Office, but is he headed for super-stardom or will his career stall beyond his portrayal of the megalomaniacal Dwight Schrute? Up until now he’s had some supporting roles in movies like Juno, My Super Ex-Girlfriend and The Last Mimzy, but he is still unproven as the lead in a comedy. Enter The Rocker, a new movie in which Wilson plays a washed-up former drummer for an 80’s rock group who is asked by his nephew to sit in with his own band. Comedy gold, right?

Well, after watching the trailer, I’m still not convinced that this is going to be a comedy in any sense of the word. Not only has the 80’s metal band schtick long since expired, but the movie looks to traffic in slapstick humour and little else. Director Peter Cattaneo previously did The Full Monty, which I liked, but this seems like a very different film (give or take one scene of Rainn Wilson eating noodles nude). The movie co-stars Christina Applegate (who’s not even in the trailer, I don’t think), Jeff Garlin, Jane Lynch, Jason Sudeikis, Fred Armisen and Emma Stone. The Rocker hits theatres on August 1st; check out the trailer below.
