Thundercade: The Writer of Fanboys Goes King of Kong

Although the long-awaited movie Fanboys is still currently in limbo with a release date TBA, writer Ernie Cline has already moved on and sold his next script. It was announced last week that Lakeshore Entertainment acquired Cline’s Thundercade, a comedy about a middle-aged video game junkie who goes on a quest to reclaim his high score title that was recently broken by some young newcomer. Hmm… where have we heard a story like this before? Oh I don’t know, maybe a little documentary called The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters?

Okay, okay, I’m not accusing Cline of plagiarism here (Harry Knowles has already gone to great lengths to defend his integrity over on Ain’t It Cool News) but it’s hard to deny the synergy that exists between this story and Seth Gordon’s wildly popular documentary. I’m guessing it had to be at least one reason for the script’s purchase. Thundercade supposedly focuses more on the generation gap between old school gamers who grew up in the 80’s and today’s Xbox and Playstation freaks — which could be interesting. Of course, there has also been talk about a fictional remake of The King of Kong, so I think it’s pretty obvious that this subject is a hot commodity in Hollywood right now. How long before someone decides to remake The Wizard?

I’ve always wondered just how exactly that autistic kid knew where the whistle was in his first time playing. I smell a cheater.

I’m all about doc’s on video games.

  • So, I guess that kind of steals the thunder of Seth Gordon’s narrative version of “King of Kong” huh? Unless they are one in the same– though that doesn’t seem likely.

I don’t know– I loved King of Kong, but I think the novelty of that premise is starting to wear thin.
