Quarantine Teaser Trailer

In the interest of striking while the iron is still hot, it seems that Sony Screen Gems have been really rushing to get their remake of the Spanish language horror film [REC] into theatres as quickly as possible. The first teaser trailer for the remake, now titled Quarantine, has just arrived online, and it’s going to be pretty obvious to anyone who sees this trailer that they’re really trying to capitalize on the success of Cloverfield.

Basically it’s a handheld zombie movie, not unlike George Romero’s Diary of the Dead, but this one actually has a few recognizable stars including Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter). I think the familiar faces are probably going to kill any feeling of authenticity the film might have (that is, if the excess of rewind, fast-forward and jittery video effects don’t do it first). Of course, I’m still interested enough to check the movie out, although I think I’d rather see [REC] first. Quarantine is directed by John Erick Dowdle (The Poughkeepsie Tapes) and hits theatres on October 17th. What do you think?

  • planning to see the original in spanish
No point on seeing this one. Like you brought up Sean, Jennifer Carpenter’s presence alone takes a lot of the efficiency of the style. At first I’d say she’s not that well known and to follow suit, would’n affect the outcome of the movie, but the thing is, this targets the same audience as Dexter’s, albeit, the horror crowd. It’s probably gonna backfire on them.

Hoorray Hollywood for Remakes of flicks not even released!

  • The aesthetic is far too similar to that of Cloverfield– at least that will be the knee-jerk reaction to this trailer. I, too, would rather wait until I can see the original Spanish language version.

  • I think I echo the other commenters here. I want to see [.REC]. And I actually want to see it really bad. I’m jealous Kurt saw it months ago.
