Kurt Wimmer’s Ultraviolet Gets Anime Spin-Off

Despite the high hopes that many people had for Kurt Wimmer’s 2006 sci-fi actioner Ultraviolet, it was essentially panned by critics and dismissed even by hardcore Milla Jovovich fans (and that’s saying something!). Strangely, it seems as though we may not have seen the last of this film. According to the good folks at Twitch, Sony is turning the property into an anime franchise.
An animated film is currently in the works at acclaimed Japanese studio Madhouse (Paprika, Metropolis), under the direction of Osamu Dezaki (Golgo 13, Black Jack). It’s unclear how close this may be to Wimmer’s original vision (the studio reportedly messed with the original film production quite a bit) but it does seem like an obvious and suitable concept to translate to animation. (In fact, when I originally reported on Ultraviolet back in 2005 I had read that it was based on a comic book… this later turned out not to be true.) The animated film is going by the name Ultraviolet Code 044 is scheduled for release in Japan on July 1st.
