3-D is Hip Again: Ray-Ban To Launch Line of Designer 3-D Glasses

Remember back in the 80’s when every sci-fi movie (well, okay, mainly Back to the Future) portrayed 3-D glasses as a major fashion trend of the future? Well that future is almost here my friends, and I’ve been waiting patiently for about 25 years to see it happen. With the advent of the new digital 3-D trend, it seems that Luxottica Group (the makers of Ray-Ban sunglasses) and Kerner Optical believe that soon people will want to own their very own pair of 3-D glasses. Instead of using the cheap plastic or cardboard ones that are given out at the theatre, you will carry around a designer pair of high quality stereoscopic glasses, mounted in Wayfarer frames, and whip them out whenever the need arises.
Kerner Optical founding partner Yuska Siuicki believes that 3-D technology is soon going to take over the world around us, and 3-D glasses will eventually become as ubiquitous as cell phones. “You will be using these high-end Ray-Ban glasses at home, on your computer and TV, and then you’ll stick them in your pocket and take them to the theater… They are much more comfortable than what is out there now, and the lenses will soon be available in prescription. This space is exploding.”
No word yet on how much they’ll cost, but they’re expected to be available for sale later this year. The question is, will anyone actually buy them?
