Andrew, I think there’s an element of sarcasm in your reference to “the greatness that is the USA.” Star Trek gets criticized by academics for spreading American ideals into outer space; however, Capt. Kirk’s running of the ship didn’t seem like much of a democracy. I think he even says it isn’t a democracy in one episode where someone pipes in with his opinion. The conference room has been a staple in all of the Star Trek series with only those of higher appointed rank getting a say. I think what makes Star Trek so appealing is that the starship captains are always stellar (pun intended) in character. Come to think of it, the American military isn’t democratic at all.

America can’t be too bad since it was where Star Trek originated from. Then again, a lot of good things probably originate from bad situations. Sorry, I’m rambling…
