This Week on DVD – Apr. 1, 2008

Wow, there is basically nothing out on DVD this week… and when I say nothing, I mean nothing. The only release of interest is probably Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd. I’m sure some parents will be suckered into picking up a copy of Alvin and the Chipmunks for the kiddies, and Gwyneth Paltrow’s brother makes his directorial debut with an indie flick called The Good Night. Also out today are the first seasons of Becker, Father Knows Best and HBO’s John from Cincinnati (I guess it got delayed from last week), along with a few new Blu-ray releases including M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable. I think your best bet is to save your money for next week.

  • Itchy-Finger

I caught The Good Night a couple months ago and really enjoyed the film. The dark comedy behind the morbidness of the film I found to be incredibly distastefull, and I loved every minute of it. Plus Pegg plays a great American trashball/northern hick. I wish they had thrown a zombie into the film somewhere though.

  • Sweeney Todd is awesome though! As is Unbreakable.

  • I second Henrik. “Sweeney Todd” is worth a pickup at the release week price, and the Blu-Ray version of “Unbreakable” is a no brainer!

  • I like “Unbreakable” and would definitely consider picking that up.

Unfortunately, I can’t say I agree with Itchy-Finger on “The Goo Night”. That movie was a mess and though Pegg is fun, he’s not in it nearly enough and rather unfortunately, Martin Freeman just seems to walk through the movie. It has some good bits but not enough for a hearty recommendation – just one for Pegg aficionados.

  • Chris

Please look at the director of the Return of the Swamp Thing’s IMDB entry. This guy has some good sounding titles.. I might just check this out. Anyone who directs movies named: The Witches of Breastwick 1 and 2, House on Hooter Hill, and Alabama Jones and the Lusty Crusade is a winner in my books.

The Cook looks like a renter. I loves me some Slasher Comedy.

  • There are Pegg aficionados? Really?

  • Itchy-Finger

I’m not ashamed to say it.

    I am a Pegg fanboy!

  • I consider myself a Pegg aficionado. And why not? The guy’s hilarious. Spaced was great, Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz were hilarious, and I enjoyed his role in Mission: Impossible III.

As for this week’s DVD releases, Sweeney Todd is a movie that I really liked, but I can’t see myself dying to watch again anytime soon. Perhaps I’ll pick it up in a few months when it has gone on sale.
