Ridley Scott to Direct Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World?

With the recent wave of movies that have been set in dystopian futures (V For Vendetta, Children of Men, Idiocracy, Southland Tales, etc.), it’s interesting to note that one of the all-time classic dystopian novels still remains unadapted for the big screen. Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World is the seminal book that introduced such concepts as the perma-happy drug Soma, and a society where everyone is born into a class and has their role assigned to them at birth. Up until now, there have only been a couple of made-for-TV versions of the book (including one that starred Peter Gallagher and Leonard Nimoy), but it looks like a high profile film adaptation may finally be in the works.
Marina over at Row Three points us toward an article from The Sunday Times, which indicates that Blade Runner director Sir Ridley Scott is in line to direct, with Leonardo DiCaprio calling dibs on the role of John the Savage. Apparently there have been major hurdles with Huxley’s estate in the past, but a new royalty deal has been negotiated with Huxley’s grandchildren, opening up the project to head into production at Universal in the near future. Leonardo DiCaprio’s father George is also a producer on the film and says the first draft of the script will be done by next week. Here’s to hoping it all comes together… I am definitely psyched to see this brilliant story finally reach the big screen.
