You may recall not too long ago hearing about a British film called The Killing of John Lennon, which, as the title implied, was a biopic about Mark David Chapman, the man who shot and killed John Lennon. The movie seems to have come and gone fairly quietly, getting a very limited release in the U.S. courtesy of IFC, but now once again by the laws of Hollywood have dictated that we should have another mirror image of the movie opening this month called Chapter 27. While The Killing of John Lennon starred mostly unknowns, Chapter 27 has the unfortunate handicap of featuring Jared Leto as Mark Chapman, along with Linsday Lohan in a supporting role as Chapman’s friend Jude.
Truth be told, I don’t really have a problem with either Lindsay Lohan or Jared Leto (Leto was great in American Psycho, Requiem for a Dream and Panic Room, for example), but one look at the trailer for this flick and you realize it’s nearly impossible to take seriously. First of all, Leto reportedly gained over 60 pounds to get into character (that’s right, he’s not wearing a fat suit or prosthetics), and while I admire his dedication, I don’t think this performance is going to win him any Oscars. The even weirder thing is that the role of John Lennon is being played by a guy named Mark Linsday Chapman. Apparently he had been turned down a chance to play John Lennon in a made for TV movie back in the 80’s specifically because his name was so similar to that of Lennon’s killer.
Chapter 27 premiered at Sundance last month and has supposedly already leaked onto the internet. For info on upcoming screenings, visit the official website at www.chapter27themovie.com. I know you’re curious, so go ahead and check out a fat Jared Leto in the trailer below.
