Kurt Wimmer in Talks to Direct Metal Gear Solid Movie?

There’s been a fair amount of talk over the past year or so about a Metal Gear Solid movie, with both Sony and series creator Hideo Kojima publicly confirming that they were committed to getting one made. A while back, there was a wild rumour about Christian Bale possibly starring as Solid Snake, but ever since then the buzz died down considerably (most likely due to the writer’s strike). Now this week we’ve got an interesting MGS update courtesy of Coming Soon.
Speaking with producer Michael De Luca at the premiere of 21, it was revealed that he is planning to meet with Kurt Wimmer in the near future to discuss writing (and possibly directing) Metal Gear Solid. The article mentions that Wimmer was the guy that fans originally wanted to direct the movie, based on the strength of his directorial debut Equilibrium. However, now that Ultraviolet has also come to pass, I am wondering how many people would rethink that option.
I will say that he seems like a good guy to write a script for this flick, as he has written both espionage (The Recruit, The Thomas Crown Affair) and sci-fi (Sphere), but as much as I liked Equilibrium I don’t know how I feel about him in the director’s chair. He could probably capture the melodramatic, over the top nature of Metal Gear Solid just fine, but in terms of helping this movie rise above the terrible video game adaptations that have come before it, I don’t know that he’d be much better than Uwe Boll. What do you think? Is Kurt Wimmer the right choice to direct Metal Gear Solid? Is there someone you’d rather see at the helm?
