Kurt Wimmer in Talks to Direct Metal Gear Solid Movie?

There’s been a fair amount of talk over the past year or so about a Metal Gear Solid movie, with both Sony and series creator Hideo Kojima publicly confirming that they were committed to getting one made. A while back, there was a wild rumour about Christian Bale possibly starring as Solid Snake, but ever since then the buzz died down considerably (most likely due to the writer’s strike). Now this week we’ve got an interesting MGS update courtesy of Coming Soon.

Speaking with producer Michael De Luca at the premiere of 21, it was revealed that he is planning to meet with Kurt Wimmer in the near future to discuss writing (and possibly directing) Metal Gear Solid. The article mentions that Wimmer was the guy that fans originally wanted to direct the movie, based on the strength of his directorial debut Equilibrium. However, now that Ultraviolet has also come to pass, I am wondering how many people would rethink that option.

I will say that he seems like a good guy to write a script for this flick, as he has written both espionage (The Recruit, The Thomas Crown Affair) and sci-fi (Sphere), but as much as I liked Equilibrium I don’t know how I feel about him in the director’s chair. He could probably capture the melodramatic, over the top nature of Metal Gear Solid just fine, but in terms of helping this movie rise above the terrible video game adaptations that have come before it, I don’t know that he’d be much better than Uwe Boll. What do you think? Is Kurt Wimmer the right choice to direct Metal Gear Solid? Is there someone you’d rather see at the helm?

  • Captain N

Kojima said he signed a class A contract for the movie. Wimmer, at least as director, doesnt really strike me as class A. Equilibrium was a good movie. Also a connection with Christian Bale, who would be a fantastic choice for Snake. I suppose I wouldnt mind him directing. And I dont really blame him for Ultra Violet. From my understanding, the film was just kind of thrown out there quite unfinished. I will say I was expecting something alittle bit more big named. I suppose Kojima should have said “A contract that will most definitely not involve Uwe Boll” instead.

  • Equilibrium was okay in my opinion. Just okay. Ultraviolet was a piece of shit with some pretty neat ideas which weren’t approached properly. I say thee nay to Kurt Wimmer. MGS is my favorite game of all time so I’ll probably be disappointed no matter what, but I’d prefer if someone associated a little more with quality films were brought onboard.

Bale, on the other hand, would be a great choice to play Snake. It’s just too bad that this movie wasn’t made about ten or twenty years ago when Kurt Russell would have been a prime candidate for the role. Then again, in the newer games Snake is fairly over the hill…

  • What has happened to Michael De Luca… He used to be such an interesting producer and now he is doing 21 and Solid Snake? Ouch.

  • Am I the only one out there that liked Ultraviolet? The movie was great fun. C’mon. William Fictner with vampire teeth, Cameron Bright in a Briefcase, and flaming fucking swords. 10 levels of awesome.

And no, I’m actually not being sarcastic this time.
I put up a positive review of Ultraviolet over at Twitchfilm upon released, and was pleasantly raked over the coals by the readership there….
