Forgetting Sarah Marshall Duo Hired for New Muppet Movie

It seems the long arm of Judd Apatow can reach almost anywhere in the movie industry nowadays, even extending to the most unlikely of places. Such as… The Muppets? That’s right, according to Variety, Apatow’s pals Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller, the writer/star and director of the upcoming comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall have been hired by Disney to create a new Muppet movie! Apparently Segel’s character in Forgetting Sarah Marshall puts on a Dracula-themed puppet show (using actual Henson Co. puppets), and this experience inspired him to pitch an idea for a new Muppet flick.

I guess Disney liked what they heard, although I don’t know that it would take much to sell them at this point. The last few Muppet movies haven’t been anything to write home about (the most recent one was that made-for-TV feature The Muppets’ Wizard of Oz). I’m definitely interested to see what comes of this. I like Jason Segel, and all the Forgetting Sarah Marshall reviews coming out of SXSW have been pretty positive. Granted, he will have to adapt his comedy just a bit… something tells me Disney won’t release an R-rated Muppet movie! If you ask me it’s about time someone gave The Muppets a bit of a makeover, and this could be just what they need to introduce the characters to a new generation.

  • I’m about 99% sure that even though it is a Disney property, that the Jim Henson Co. has to sign off on anything Muppet related before it can go forward. This might end up being much to do about nothing.
