Michael Bay to Give Birth to Rosemary’s Baby Remake

If you thought the onslaught of horror remakes was starting to die down… well, you thought wrong. Word on the street is that Michael Bay is at it again, with his production company Platinum Dunes currently in talks with Paramount to give Rosemary’s Baby the modern remake it so rightly deserves. Producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form are in search of a screenwriter to re-adapt Ira Levin’s 1967 novel in hip new ways.

The original Rosemary’s Baby was directed by Roman Polanski and starred Mia Farrow, John Cassavetes and Ruth Gordon (who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress). While I’m sure many young people nowadays have never seen the film, as far as I’m concerned, this movie is up there with The Exorcist as one of those horror movies that just shouldn’t be touched. Although I admit to being curious about some of the recent horror remakes (and yes, even paying to see a few of them), I really think it’s time people stopped supporting the studios in these endeavours. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it… at least until they bring on board a director that I actually like, at which point I may have to eat my words.

It’s not even so much the remake that has me concerned, it’s that it’s Michael Bay doing it.

  • Haha, I agree with Liz. The problem with remaking older horror films is that the tendency to add more gore, special effects, modern elements, etc. seems to detract from what made the movie scary in the first place. The book is SUPER creepy and was written not too long before the movie came out so there’s a veracity to the film.

Remaking it now, after everything that’s happened since, i.e., slasher movies, The Exorcist movie, Vietnam, The Equal Rights Amendment, etc. would mean they’d almost need to up the ante to make it scary.

I know it could be done in a subtle, creepy way that would make it terrifying, but no director is going to do that because the studios won’t let them. As much as The Descent terrified me, it’s an anomaly. I tend to gravitate towards older, creepier movies instead of the straight up gore effects.

  • Yikes! The idea of remaking this film itself makes me a little queasy… to hear that HE will be doing it is downright horrific.

  • I liked Michael Bay’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake. The prequel was pretty much shit, but the straight remake wasn’t bad. I’ll give this a try. It’s not like Bay is directing the film, so at least I should be able to tell what’s happening onscreen.

  • The remake was a fucking piece of shit I think. The only place the filmmakers seemed to care about anything in the film was when they got to shoot Jessica Biel at a 45 degree angle. What a fucking horrible experience that was.

The studios are sure getting creative with their match ups. Perhaps they can get David Lynch to remake the Magnificent Seven.
