Starship Troopers 3: Marauder Trailer

I didn’t hear too many positive things about the direct-to-video Starship Troopers sequel, Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation, and it never interested me enough to check it out. However, I have to say that this new trailer for Starship Troopers 3: Marauder is pretty awesome, actually. It’s done in the style of those propaganda films that were featured quite often in Paul Verhoeven’s first movie, and the fact that Casper Van Dien is returning to the role of Johnny Rico does make it feel a lot more like a Starship Troopers flick.

The third installment will be another direct to DVD release, and it marks Starship Troopers/Robocop writer Ed Neumeier’s directorial debut. The other big selling point is that the movie co-stars Jolene Blalock of Enterprise fame. I think I might actually check this out. Starship Troopers 3: Marauder is currently slated for release on July 15th. You can watch the new trailer right now on YouTube (embedded below).

  • This looks horrible.

  • This looks so horrible it’s awesome. YAY!

  • You guys are crazy this looks awesome. Actually it doesn’t really show much decent footage from the movie, which is probably a smart move. I did like the style of the trailer though.

  • The effects look horrible. I like the style, but without Paul Verhoeven making it amazing, I highly doubt it will be worth watching. Casper Van Dien looked worse in this than in the original. He doesn’t even say “Come on you apes! You wanna live forever?!” :(.

Looks about on par with the original effects and well….everything wise. With that said… I am surprised this isnt going to theater…or should I be surprised that the first movie wasnt direct to video?

  • I’m wondering which trailer Sean watched, because clearly it wasn’t this one.

I’m going to have to say that I thought the trailer was horrible as well, and I’m not saying this just to agree with Henrik.

I was reading the comments under the “Jolene Blalock to star in Starship Troopers 3″ post from June of last year. I have to disagree with Rian. I saw Starship Troopers 2, and I thought it was a nice character piece.

I have to admit that I thought the first 10 minutes of the movie was crap. It looked like Phil Tippett had no sense of being able to frame a shot.

The acting I found to be decent and the story was set up so that I was curious to find out how it was all going to end. The females got some decent characterization.

There was the appropriate satire. But I guess the movie didn’t really add anything new to the genre.

I’m not sure if my paying $1.99 for the DVD has influenced my opinion of the movie.

  • If Reed Farrington says it’s horrible, then it must be good! I rest my case.

I just don’t understand what people want from a Starship Troopers movie. I don’t expect it to be anywhere near as good as the original, but it seems like they’re at least staying true to the spirit of it.

  • Hilarious satire and kickass action. Basically what I want is Paul Verhoeven back in Hollywood.

  • Sean, I like your taste. I’m really looking forward to this for reals. I’m hoping I can add it to my “really fun to watch while getting drunk” list of films.

I had fun with ST 2, I’ll give this a shot. I really liked the Starship Troopers animated series, even with it’s stiff facial animations, so this should be fun.

  • The fact that this trailer makes the film look so similar to the original actually provides me with some hope that it may be okay. However, while I can’t exactly put my finger on it, something about this film just feels off. Something about the trailer made it feel cheap and shitty. Could it have been the fact that it is cheap and possibly shitty? Only time will tell.

As far as Starship Troopers 2 is concerned, I still hold the opinion that it is a piece of garbage with next to no redeeming features. The effects were horrible, the acting was sub-par at best, and it seemingly had nothing to do with the original. Not to mention the story was terrible!

Reed, after hearing about some of the movies that you haven’t cared for in the sci-fi genre on the second episode of Cantankerous, and then hearing your thoughts on the quality of Starship Troopers 2, I am baffled. As though you didn’t seem to be a hard enough nut to crack psychologically before, I just cannot seem to wrap my mind around how your brain works after hearing/reading these comments. You are a truly intriguing and mysterious individual, sir.

I loved Starship Troopers, though ST2 sucked a lot.

  • With the war in Iraq happening, maybe it’s time for a movie that laughs at enlistment?

“Sign up for the military, it’s awesome!” (Cut to people being eaten alive by bugs.)

  • TheEJS

With the war in Iraq happening, maybe it’s time for a movie that laughs at geopolitically-ignorant civilians?

“Say No McBushHitler’s Endless War, Don’t Steal Oil!” (Cut to phil eaten alive by bugs.)

Biggest point is that I’m still waiting on a true SST movie (and one that doesn’t play out like phil’s wetdream fantasy of showcasing a militaristic world regime).

i don`t think this movie looks as good as the first one

  • There is no way this film is going to be as excellant as the first, but then thats obvious! I didnt expect alot from Starship Troopers 2, thats why I kinda liked it. Dont expect alot from this and you wont be disappointed.

From the trailer the CGI doesnt look that great, however on small productions like this they often put out a trailer before the visual effects have been perfected and rendered, so they could be better, you never know.

The main thing that captivated me about the original was the vision of a heavily militarised-future, the sexual equality, the number of people who got savaged by bugs and the epic battles. We all know its not real and we know its on a budget and going straight to TV/DVD so lets not moan about the CGI and lets appreciate the story.

Well i think is gonna be better than the first sequel but not a great as the original. Also you can’t judge the movie by the trailer but after seeing how the archnids look like. I think they should have put a little effort on the arachnids, they look more like game animation feeling.

  • Femininity

At first I thought it was some kind of satire on war movies around the world, the kind of patriotic movies where they are ‘fighting for their lives against innumerable odds’. And then the shooting began and I thought, they are actually taking this seriously!
Not cool. If you’re going to make an action movie, make fun and snarky and smart, not just relying on guts, blood, gore and lots of gunfire.

  • Damn…why am I just seeing this now! Looks ok, but nowhere as good as the first one which seemed to combine the elements of romance/horror/drama/comedy beautifully! This seems to pile on more cheeze and forced humour. I’ll check it out, because I love the “Starship Trooper” concept of humans fighting giant alien bugs. I think Caspar Van Diem is cool too!

  • Vong

I hope this movie is better than the second one. The first one was good. I really didnt get the point of the second one. In the end of the second one, they made it look like a “documentary” about a hero to boost the morale of people civilians and soldiers. I want more action and more bug killing in this. And no random sex scenes that really have no purpose in the movie, but to boost the ratings to make it rated “R.”

  • Sing

I liked the first one, but the lack of support units is annoying. No tanks or anything. Just like in the second one, sending a bunch of men and women into combat against a colony of arachnids was just putting soldiers in a “meat grinder.” (some soldier tells one of the main characters holding a baby) And even though its a trailer, putting soldiers in a trench is not a good idea. A well defended hill or mountain side is a good idea, or an outpost like in the first movie. You’d think a futuristic military would have better knowledge in both terrain and warfare tactics. Then again its just a movie.
This is Sing, signing out with a soap box speech.

  • John

Well…it dose not look totally horrible, has got to be better the #2 (which was a complete disgrace to the title “Starship Troopers”). This one looks decently ok tho.

  • Clerk-Kent

Not a bad trailer, although if you look hard enough they’ve ripped off a few effects/scenes from the original Starship Troopers.

(See if you can guess which ones)

    Not a good look…

  • travis

woWWWW… how could any of you diss starship troopers… its the best satire scifi comedy ever made

  • Sean

Some of this stuff annoys me.

1- ST is a B-movie series because it’s supposed to be a B-movie series. It’s the same as those old war films from the fifties and sixties. The only difference is that this was done intentionally to satirize such films.

2- The MI doesn’t have armor support because that would make fighting the bugs too easy. No one ever made a movie about the horrors of the backlines (at least not a good one). Another possible reason is that tanks are not mobile enough to compete with the bugs, infantry is fluid and adaptable, armor can only operate under certain conditions. Air support is also difficult because tankers can shoot plasma. A better question would be “Why not just destroy the planet?”

3- Elevated positions are a bad idea against the bugs because 1: tankers can more easily undermine land that’s been softened by building and 2: every bug you kill from an elevated position gives the other bugs another step closer to you whereas, from a trench, a burrowing tanker would be more evident and tunneling up would not compromise the entire structure. Also, killing bugs from a trench would increase the distance the others would have to cover rather than decrease it as they would have to climb up AND THEN down their dead comrades, giving defenders more time to shoot them, making the other bugs’ journey even more difficult.

I’ve said what I needed to say.

Starship Troopers 3: Marauder is one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. It may even be worse than Highlander 2. I want my money back *plus* damages for pain and suffering. It’s like an unintentional parody of the first movie. Absolutely AWFUL!

  • Uce: You saw it? Wow. I’m so on the fence to see it.

  • Mark McKarrion

    Starship Troopers 3 was ass.
