Film Junk Live Oscar Chat This Sunday at 8pm EST

With this year’s Oscar Telecast coming up on Sunday, we’ve been thinking about whether or not we should do something special here on Film Junk to celebrate the event. It seems like almost every movie site has their own thing that they do (last year we did a live podcast on Talkshoe for the entire duration… which lasted FOREVER). Even though I’m not personally all that big on the Oscars, this is a time of year when movie fans like to come together and interact, and I’d hate to miss out on that. So this year I thought we’d try something a little more laidback and simple.

On Sunday, starting at 8pm EST, we’ll be opening up a live chat room on Film Junk using Gabbly.com. This is your chance to shoot the breeze about your favourite movies of the year and just generally hang out with us and other Film Junkies online while we watch. I’ll also be posting the winners on the site as they are announced, although I won’t be offering any in-depth commentary or anything. (Last year we found that the more you try to talk about the Oscars as they are happening, the less you actually see of the ceremony.) I know not everyone has a computer in the same room as their TV, but if you can, we hope you’ll drop by for a bit and say hello.

  • Nice one! I think I will join you guys. :-)

  • Cain

    cool

  • If I’m at home I’ll join in, but it’s definitely true that the oscar show is improved immensely if you actually sit down and watch it. Last year’s was fun for sure, but I think of the shows I have seen it was my worst memory of a show.

  • Goon

unless theres a website that broadcasts the oscars, i’ll be away from the comp loungin in front of the tube with some salty snacks.

  • Primal

I don’t think I’ve ever watched the oscars the whole way through. With you guys doing a live chat for it, then I probably could sit through some of the montages, artsy ballet and dance numbers or whatever crap they like to put in there. I’ll definitely drop by.

  • Reed Farrington

I hope I get invited over to Sean’s place. In preparation, I watched the movie, “Away From Her.” (Julie Christie is guaranteed to win Best Actress for her performance in this movie.)

I can guarantee you that neither Sean, Jay, or Greg have watched “Away From Her,” so I think there will be a gap in their coverage unless I’m invited.

  • Greg

Suck it, Reed! I took my Mom to see it.

    Booyah.

  • a clash of the titans live between Greg & Reed!? Screw the Oscars! Just go toe-to-toe live on the air!

Pay-Per View aside, I might join in on the chat depending on what plays at my local theatre (really looking forward to Be Kind Rewind). So I guess you guys will be the plan B, but wipe that frown off your face, you’re still a kick-ass (did I type this?) crew.

PS: If Reed joins in on the event, make sure he does not mention the slightest thing about Star Trek. I’m thorn between my hate for Star Trek & my appreciation of Reed’s methodical use of racial slurs.

  • ShenEvil44

    Count me in, guys!

  • Reed Farrington

    Colour me surprised, Greg.

I’ve got my invitation to Sean’s place for the Oscars, but I think Greg and I will be civil. Actually, I have to commend him for bringing in some Magnetic Fields CDs into his HMV location. I’ve got nothing bad to say about Greg even though he seems to think that half of what I say is stupid.

I’ve been working up some jokes to compete with Jon Stewart’s opening monologue. Stuff like: What’s with the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay? I mean, if I went to the Pulitzer Prize ceremony, would I expect to find a Best Adapted Manuscript category?

Oh boy, I can see Greg telling me I’m stupid again.

  • Is there some way that this chat can be logged so I can read it after-the-fact?

  • Greg

    That’s terrible comedy Reed.

I don’t believe I’ve ever called you stupid, nor do I think what you say is stupid.

    You’re just Gerry. That’s all.

  • The chat could potentially be logged… I’ll look into it. Somehow I doubt you’re going to want to sift through a few hours of random chatter to get to a few interesting tidbits though.

  • That’s what being a fan is all about though.
