Dominic Monaghan to Play Blackwing in X-Men Origins: Wolverine?

Alright, now this is getting out of hand! Yesterday we posted about the casting of Gambit in the upcoming Wolverine movie, and also Deadpool and John Wraith. Now it looks like yet another obscure mutant has joined the roster, and it is a character by the name of Blackwing, who will be played by Dominic Monaghan (Lost).

I initially had no idea who Blackwing was, but after reading up on him, I found that he also goes by the name of Beak, and his real name is Barnell Bohusk. This is the weird ass wimpy bird character from Grant Morrison’s run on New X-Men. According to Wikipedia:

“His body changed into that of a humanoid-bird form, with a beaked face, bulbous eyes, wing-like arms that give him the ability to fly (albeit clumsily), talons on his hands and feet, and double-jointed knees. He also possesses heightened agility, and he may possess heightened senses and a lighter skeletal structure like the avian X-Man formerly known as the Angel.”

Who knows why they would have chosen this guy to appear in the movie, and even went out of their way to cast a big name. It sounds to me like unintentional humour may result, unless they are viewing him as comic relief (which he sort of was in New X-Men if I remember correctly). But back to the topic at hand… am I wrong in wondering if the Wolverine movie is still actually about Wolverine?

  • Beak. Nuff’ said.

  • If Beak is just being tortured by the Weapon X scientists or something, I can see him being in the film. Otherwise, I don’t see the point. He’s a weakling half-bird half-man whose powers do essentially nothing for him aside from make him hideous. Yes, during the last arc of Grant Morrison’s X-Men run Beak is a badass in a post-apocalyptic future, but I can’t imagine that this is the version of the character we’ll be seeing in the movie. I really, really, really hope that Beak isn’t a little wuss of a character who Wolverine carts around with him for the entire film because he feels sorry for him and tries to teach him how to hold his own, but that vision keeps burrowing it’s way into my subconscious.

i decided to look up that character on mutanthigh.com for the full X-Men story…

seems his story had a lot to do with him being just plain pathetic, that his mutations weren’t working out positively or as a weapon like other mutants do – he was someone who was taken advantage of and then led astray, and can only do anything with actual given weapons, and nothing to do with his powers..

so i guess some similar storyline of him being weak is in order?

i really like beak among other new characters like chamber, and prosimian. but in the movie there is a still were he has no wings no beak and looks normal so i guess they just changed the character completely they took beaks beak and it makes me wonder what his power will be in the movie and why they even used him if he has no beak. i was really excited to see beak with a beak like in the comics now my excitement has dropped but maybe stryker changes him will have to wait and see hope he has a beak at some ;point would make a great visual character they need at least one visual character in each x-men movie like in x1 it was mystique,x2 nightcrawler,x-3 beast.give beak his beak.

they had better give him his damb beak in this movie and not screw this character up.

  • Just an FYI, he’s playing Bolt, not Beak.
