New To Theatres This Weekend – Feb. 15, 2008

Once again, it’s the dead of winter here and there’s little reason to leave home to venture out to the local theatre. The Spiderwick Chronicles is the latest in a long line of kid’s fantasy stories to get adapted for the big screen, and Definitely, Maybe is your standard Valentine’s Day romantic comedy starring Ryan Reynolds, Isla Fisher, Rachel Weisz, Elizabeth Banks and Abigail Breslin. Step Up 2 The Streets is (obviously) the sequel to the successful dance flick Step Up. The only movie that seemed remotely interesting was Doug Liman’s Jumper, but reviews have been absolutely abysmal. Both George Romero’s Diary of the Dead and this year’s Academy Award-nominated short films (both live action and animated) are playing in select theatres. I only wish they had a wider release.

  • Film Comment had a big piece on Romero and Diary of the Dead which just made me want to see it even more.

  • I’m supposed to be going to see Jumper tonight. My fingers are officially crossed. I think it looks like it could turn out pretty good, but from I hear I’m way off in that belief.
